Default boxing

hey whats up, im thinking of starting boxing after me and my friends got jumped last weekend and my friend got his head stomped on. I really need to learn how to fight as i get very aggressive when i drink but i dont wanna break my hands/fingers or injure them cos im planning on becoming a rockstar (im a guitarist) so i was wondering whether im likely to break anything from learning how to box properly. Like if i learn properly and say punch someone in the face am i likely to hurt my hands, or am i better of learning a martial art? Also im trying to gain some muscle so would doing boxing training hamper my results because its largely a cardiovascular activity. I'd plan on doing boxing 2x a week and working out 1-2 times, id also be eating to cover the energy i burn from boxing. Any advice?

Yes, you can hurt your hands punching someone.

Learning boxing or not, you can still get a lot more than your hand hurt fighting.

I think you might need to work on the aggression and avoiding bad situations. Maybe look at what's happening such that you feel the need to learn to box. Cure the problem, don't cover the symptom.

Hey Chris,

That's some solid advice, my friend. I have learned that the best way to win a fight is to stay out of it entirely. Developing the ability to identify problem situations and avoid them is worth more than all the punching skills in the world.

Having said that, I have a blast with boxing and it gives me an incredible workout. However, I do my absolute best to avoid fights and conflicts that seem likely to lead to fights. I have no desire to get seriously injured or killed, or to seriously injure or kill anyone else.

Hey bluesrocker,

First, welcome to the forums.

I am sorry to learn about your experience over the weekend. I hope you and your friends are alright.

Please read that quoted text again.

"I really need to learn how to fight as i get very aggressive when i drink"

Abuse of alcohol has either destroyed or severely damaged the lives of several people who are dear to me. It's a pain you probably don't want to experience, and one you probably don't want to inflict on the people who know and care about you.

Here's how I see it. If you're getting very aggressive or violent when you drink, you need to stop drinking. Learning to box or learning martial arts will not deal with the underlying problem; it will merely add fuel to the fire. If you learn how to fight better, your drunken aggression may result in someone getting seriously injured or killed. That will wreck your music career. Don't give up your dreams, man, don't toss them away for the sake of consuming some booze. It's among the worst tradeoffs you can possibly make.

Look, if you want to be a boxer, then by all means do so. It's a great sport, an intense workout, and a helluva lot of fun. I love it. I have been training in it and competing, on and off, since I was a boy. But please, please, PLEASE deal with the underlying problem of alcohol-fueled aggression.

I'm not being judgmental, just direct. You have a dream. Go for it, pursue it, and live it to the fullest. But don't let the drink ruin those dreams for you.

This is all straight from the heart, dude. I have seen alcohol and drugs f*** up the lives of some really good people and cause misery so intense that it still shocks me and leaves me very sad.

thanks for the advice. Im gonna have a think about that and see if i can figure out why i become aggressive when i drink. I wanted to learn boxing as a form self defense and i hope i dont get into a fight but if i do i wanna be prepared.
I think i will take up boxing though as im pretty unfit at the moment and wouldn't mind getting back in shape and bulking up aswell. Will boxing act as a workout on its own? If i eat alot and train hard at boxing twice a week will i get bigger or should i workout say twice a week and just do boxing once if i was just looking at getting bigger.
