Hi guys
I train muay thai and have been using my 12ounce gloves to train, everything from working the heavy bag to mitts training. I heard that open fingered gloves, which are lighter are better for mitts training. Any advice to this?
Ash

I always preferred to do the majority of my training alternating between 12 oz. and 16 oz. gloves. I never used smaller gloves for Muay Thai, only in MMA.
1 of the benifits of open finger gloves is timing of the tension/clench of you punch on impact. When wearing boxing gloves the tendency is to keep hands open even on impact. The risk of injury increases with open finger gloves, keep that in mind. Start with the heavy bag to increase your spacial awareness as working w/a trainer on the mitts increases variables.
I find the fingerless mitts keep me much more disciplined tensing my fists when hitting the bag.

Ah, I see. I've never had a problem keeping my fists closed. Maybe it's cuz of the Wing Chun or because I used the small gloves anyway for MMA training. But I couldn't generate as much power without clenching my fists just before impact anyway.
can't see any benefits to fingerless gloves especially if you compete in muay thai as weight differneces in the gloves are substantial (depends on wt class you fight in as well)
fingerless gloves also tend to result in fingers getting cut and bruised for some people
I really appreciate that you have jumped in and are offering positive contributions all over the board
You appear knopwledgable, rational and well read
So far I'm impressed

Sorry mate...I'm no expert....it just looks like an ab lounger commercial.
I would normally have kept my questionable opinions to myself but I had had a beer or two that night.
You seem like a knowledgable sincere guy and the website appearence doesn't support that. I'm not talking about the content. To be honest...I didn't spend much time reading it - I fear other people looking at it might make the same mistake.
