martial arts and girls
Have you guys noticed that there are not that many good girls in martial arts? Every girl I’ve met is just average or worse. I asked my TKD master why there are not too many girls sparring competitively and his response was “girls are not good”. I don’t mind his comment at all, I actually agree with him. And I don’t think I’m any good, in fact I know exactly where my skills are lacking however some girls at my studio think they are the sh*t, but in my opinion they are not as good as they think they are. What do you think on this subject?

I like girls too...
My personal experience only but girls tend to much better to begin with with co-ordination and retention but they always seem to lack focus.
Movements rather than techniques, plenty of grace but not enough hostile intent.

You are at the wrong school then. I've trained with plenty that could kick the asses of most men.
Find a better teacher.

Just talking about the raw material Kuri...although the percentage who stick it out tends to be smaller with the fairer gender.

Oops, I was addressing Orly not you Dazza.
And I don't know about the sticking it out part. When I think back to all the schools/clubs I've been in often the most dedicated members have been women.

I agree with Irishdazza, most girls don’t stick it out, that’s why there are more men in higher degree belt then women, and only a few girls have “enough hostile intent”. I suppose each school is different, and the girls that go to competition are obviously more serious than those that just come to the studio. But even in competitions I’ve seen girls that didn’t want to hit hard enough. A lot of girls that I’ve seen will quit midway though, or if they make it to black belt, a lot of them will take a “break” and most likely not return later. I’m not putting girls down, obviously I am one, and I would rather see more girls into martial arts (so that I have someone to spar with) but I’m curious why they are not as good as men. At least in class I would much rather spar with a guy because I know he will be serious in his kick and I better watch out.

Well having said the "raw material" might have issues, as others have said, the girls who do apply themselves and stick it out, do reach as high a standard.
