Default Tim Sylvia interview: Wants to be the best heavyweight...ever! LOL!

Thought you guys might get a kick out of this interview.

“My goal is to become the best heavyweight fighter in the UFC. Right now I have accomplished that and I just want to keep it going. I want to be known as the best heavyweight of all time.”

http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/...=2954&zoneid=2

I think he should stay in the UFC!

Well, we can't blame him for wanting to be the best. Actually being the best is a whole other story. But the only way he'll beat the top heavyweights in the world is if they die laughing from him thinking he's as good as they are.

The part that made me laugh was when he said he phoned Dana up and asked for a fight with Fedor and then how he wanted to beat up Fedor's brother so Fedor would bin Pride and come to the UFC to fight him.

I really hope Monson passes them long arms and gets the take down...

Either he is the dumbest professional MMA fighter in the world or he's insanely over-confident. A fight with Fedor would show just how much of a joke Sylvia's belt is. Dana probably replied with "What are you, fucking stupid?!?!?!"

lmao. Touche' man.

Maybe if he'd show some actual skill on par with being a HW champ and not just win because of his height the fans would stop booing him.

As the Sylvia/Monson fight progressed into the third round, I said: "Sylvia's gonna get a chorus of boos from the crowd when they call him the winner...."

I certainly wasn't impressed. And the commentary? Sucked yet again.

Dana White better be happy that GSP won the way he did - that right there saved the entire evening of some really bad UFC.

He deserves those boos imo. The only thing he has going for him is his height. Having an 11" reach advantage, if he was any kind of a puncher he should've been able to knock Monson out. It's also the only reason his sprawl is so good and he was able to survive on the ground. Obviously it's not his fault he's so tall and it's not as if he has no skills. But he just doesn't show much of a skillset for someone who fights for a career and is so much bigger than his opponents, let alone supposed to be a champion. If he did he would be one of the best heavyweight champions in the world.

Just a thought about Sylvia and UFC HVW8 championship fights.

Compare Sylvia's last few fights that went the distance with any Pride championship from Fedor on back through when Nogueira was ruling, which is some four years.

some difference right?

We can only hope Aleksander Emelianenko and the UFC can agree to terms.

I think they're pretty different.

- Every one who's a fan of MMA outside of just the UFC knows that the UFC's heavyweights are low on talent (on a worldwide level). Dos's statement about the Pride heavyweights is pretty much right on. The only one I think might not beat Sylvia is Alex Emelianenko. I think they're about the same skill-level. Werdum just beat Alex in a Pride event in Spain. I think Heath Herring and Semi Schultz would beat Sylvia too. But all of those guys are fighting other top caliber fighters in most of their matches.

- Not all matches that go the distance are boring. I can think of quite a few that were exciting fights: Ortiz vs. Franklin, Silva vs. Hunt, Fedor vs. Nog, and I defy anyone to put the match between Fedor and Crocop into the same stratosphere as Sylvia vs. Monson or Arlovski II or III. It's not that matches go the distance that makes them boring. It's how they go the distance. In the majority of the matches you're talking about there was a lot more activity from at least one of the fighters involved. When Fedor fought Nog he had punches, kicks and throws. Sylvia doesn't fight like a champion. He didn't fight to win. He fought not to lose. It's the same gripe I have with Matt Hughes and most of the guys who dont do anything but ground and pound. It's the same grip I had with Ray Boom Boom Mancini when he fought Hector Macho Comacho and would just dance around the ring instead of fight (not to say he has to go toe to toe the whole fight). Their strategies bring them wins and their victories are legitimate but they show little imagination and only a small amount of skill for someone who is a professional, let alone a champion. It makes me wonder what they spend all their time doing when they're training. It's also one of the reasons Pride is better than the UFC (stalling penalties and points for trying to end the fight).

- Sylvia had an 11" height and reach advantage and at least 20 lbs on Monson. Everyone that's ever fought knows that even a 5" reach advantage is a big plus in your favor. We can't fault Sylvia for his height or the UFC's lackluster HW talent. Obviously he should use that to his advantage. But that's all he shows us for assets. He's got quite a few knockouts so he's got that going for him. But that's not much considering his physical advantages. How about developing some actual skills? He's decent. It's not that he's a BAD fighter so much as he's not nearly as good as you'd expect the HW champion in one of the largest MMA organizations in the world would be. And when he's calling out Fedor and thinking he's of that caliber what else should he expect but heat?

Hell, even Shaq shows skills and athleticism, though not in the free throw area lol.
