Default DO you think that UFC stops their fights too soon?

I feel so. One hit, and the match is over... Can be a real buzz kill.....
( I do, however understand fighter safety, and in certain times, stopping the fight is the right thing to do.)

Well, lets say Liddell Vs babalu? I felt that could have gone just a bit longer...

I think its pretty fair for the most part. While there have been a FEW times that things could have went a little longer I think over all the refs do a pretty damn good job at spotting when a fighter is hurt and not defending.

You have to take into account there are not many fighters that will admit to being out of it and unable to defend themselves. Their are so many over inflated ego's that they just wont admit to being beat cleanly. So in the end it also adds to controversy.

I also think the UFC is trying to legitimize itself as a modern day sport to the masses. The only way to do that is to make it palletable for them. For the hardcore fan its hard to accept because we want NHB fighting with little rules and more honest fighting. Its all about keeping a balance now, with guys like Bill O'Rielly calling it a "Blood Sport" and bashing it on his show we need all the help we can get to keep it legal and safe.

One thing to note that there has not been one death in the 15 years that NHB events have taken place. While in that time there have been multiple deaths to Boxers averaging almost 1 a year. Serious injury hardly ever happens in actual matches it usually happens in practice.

After watching Cro Cop beat up on Silva I tend to believe that compared to Pride the UFC does stop them a bit to soon. But as others have pointed out it's all about making the sport better. There are definetly bouts that have been called WAY to soon.

the Barnett-crocop fight would have got stopped a lot sooner in the UFC. I think there is a fine line but the bottom line is that a good stop is when the fighter doesn't get too badly damaged. They let the fighter go a bit longer in Pride....i can think ot the Shogun-Rampage fight where Rampage got his rib broken...I think the UFC would have stopped it the moment he didn't answer after about the 4th or 5th strike.

he was grabbing BJM, how can you argue that one? If a guy is beat delirious to the point he's trying to leglock the ref(and in an extremely weak manner) chances are he's out of the fight.

Here's the example of a fight I was talking about.....UFC stops this about 5:23 on this vid...no brainer. I think Rampage broke his rib about 2:15 of the fight.

Sure, if the ref would have stopped Ortiz..let shammy up ....then let them start again. Don't think the raining elbows would have stopped anytime soon though. Same has been said for Wandy vs. Belfort when Belfort barraged him and just overwhelmed Wandy in their UFC fight..Wandy got up complaining but it wasn't like he or shamrock would have been able to do that had the ref not stopped it at the moment.

With four ounce gloves, bad things can happen real fast. Better to stop the fight than have something go really bad.

UFC had problems in the beginning, so they have to keep it safe in order to survive.

As far as comparing Pride to UFC...

Things are a little looser in Japan, even more so in other Asian countries, and this does not bode well for the fighter.

also worth noting, over here the only people employed by the company are the two fighting. Judges, refs, Dr.s are all payed by the SAC(state athletic commission).

I agree with Dos' take on the mentioned fights. If you watch the replays of Sham-Ortiz from outside the cage looking in, you see his hands are pretty lifeless with elbows landing clean on the side of his head.

Herb Dean did his job, protect the fighter(again worth noting, Dean fights). I think he put it best when he said, "I can't control how fast they recover".

Keep in mind that every fighter knows the risks of fighting. Look at the NFL, suppose they say it's to violent... those guys make millions of dollars and also know the risks.

Ever watched a BIG match in boxing.. ever notice that if the guy is a big name they won't stop it until the last second, even if it's for the title the guy is still human right? His health should be the same concern, but it's not.

Gracie got the tar beat out of him in the first couple UFC's, and still won the fights!!!

And Rocky Marciano fought with a broken jaw...doesn't mean they should have let him.

That said...I prefer the way Pride do it too!

what does that have to do with anything?

they also get a chance to recover every time they get knocked down. this isn't boxing, having someone pounding on your head when your doing nothing is a different matter.

not really, Kimo and Sevren were the only ones who did much damage to him. and why are you comparing apples to oranges? taking a beating while putting up a fight is completely different from taking a beating while laying there taking a beating.

Boxing gloves have padding, MMA gloves have little (elbows, shins and knees have none).

In boxing, you can't get hit once you go down.

In MMA you can get your head pounded in to the canvas, no give. Your head will take all the force. You have to stop things a little earlier to protect the fighter.

And it is wrong to let fight go just because it is a title fight, but when money is involved, the fighters health goes out the window.

Just that, every fighter knows that every fight could be his last. Ever here some of the UFC fighters talk about dying in the ring if they have to? Lets face it, people want to see blood, car racing is the same way, let see the wrecks. I don't think that way but many do, and if the fights get stopped to quickly, people aren't going to pay the big coin to see them. That's all I meant.
