Default "Traditional" Karate

Saw this on one of Ross's boards - not bad, eh?

Good stuff. It reminds me alot of combat sambo (Russian) in that it's basically MMA with a gi.

While living in Japan the dojo I trained at was "traditional" Okinawan karate but my teacher had us grappling, training throws, putting on headgear & gloves and going fullcontact etc...

This school was part of a larger trend from what I've seen.
MMA has gotten so popular in Japan that alot of karate styles have developed a more open attitude towards grappling and other facets of MA.

Nothing new under the sun Kuri - just a return to true traditional Karate after years of half hearted nonsense! Long may it reign!

Wow..that was simply raw and uncomplicated Karate. Not like the point sparring we are used to seeing.

Thanks for that footage Irish.

After seeing that, I must make it to class tonight....

I would like to see more of this in the US instead of those glorified games of tag that too often pass for comps.

I once (and only once) entered an open style point sparring comp and it was ridiculous. The eventual winner's big "technique" was some kind of jump backfist that would "land" a foot above the opponent's head.
