Default Training for martial arts

So im coming off another minor back injury, which is no big deal but a pain none the less. I decided to use the down time to read and dig some new programs up for my training. So im sitting in the physios office and see this new extension added on to the building, and it turns out he is now doing sports specific training for athletes, anyone, anything. He's defiantly legit, no doubt there, he is a reputable sports physiotherapist.

So of course my eyes light up and I start talking to him about my martial arts needs (kendo). As im waiting for the holy grail of strength and HIIT advice he gives me the following:

Program: Walk at an accelerated pace 5 times a week, 1 hour a day. (Martial arts training continues 3/per week)

Diet: Cut out 500 cls per day to drop 1 pound each week (7x500=3500), make healthy choices.

My physio did ask me if I felt strong enough for my sport, and of course I am, actually a little to strong. Personally I feel I need some cardiovascular training to compliment a balanced strength training routine, but what do I know. Im not that fat, I wouldnt have said that walking was my first priority, and if it the walking really was for fat loss, where's the HIIT? I know its not due to my back, I have been cleared to lift and train at full capacity. Can anyone add any thinking to this??
