It's safe to say these kids are not getting wedgied at school

Not much in the way of striking ability....a wrestling club that's moving over?

I was kind of surprised at kids that young going after it too, but it looked to me like the refs were on top of things, expecially when the youngest kids were out there. I noticed that a couple of times the refs jumped in before joint locks were taken to the point of hyper-extension.
Not to say injuries couldn't occur but my guess is that there are limited striking and other such rules for younger age categories, as most MA tourneys use.

Yeah, I was mostly thinking in terms of the submissions, but I did notice refs get right on it. Perhaps the rule is to get solidly in position and then you get the "gimme." It also looked like strikes to the face weren't happening, but were directed to the upper chest from the mount position. I imagined a rule to that effect. Those modifications would be safe for younger kids. Otherwise, I'm not a wrestler, so some of the headlocks-into-takedowns make my cringe a bit. LOL This from a guy who directs his youth competitors to kick to the head. LOL

Nothing that we didn't do on the playground on a daily basis so I guess it's fine

How did you come to that conclusion in such a small sampling of fights?
I saw some serious technical submission work for young kids. Not just wrestling that had "moved over".
I'm sure that some of those kids have a standup game but in MMA the ground game takes center stage. Especially in this case, when you take away head shots.
Just that there were a lot of missed opportunities...and the shots that were taken, looked clumsy compared to their ground game. Just an opinion.

Since punches to the head aren't allowed than naturally most competitors would gear their game not towards a knockout strategy but towards setting up a takedown/submission.
Have you ever tried to strike against a good grappler? It isn't easy. You've got to modify your stance as well as strikes to guard against a shot, so swinging for the fences, especially to the body is not often the best strategy.

Must confess, I've only done it once in a training session. That's why I asked.
Guess I better hold off on that job as a MMA commentator...
