Default MA training question

So I'm starting Jujitsu classes this week, which is something I've been wanting to do for months now. My question is, what should I expect in how physically demanding it will be? And, what exercises are best to improve endurance, strength and performance?

This is really probably a moot question that I will figure out the answer to on my own fairly shortly... I'm just psyched about it, and felt the need to talk about it!

(FYI I'm in my 20s, pretty decent shape @ around 180 lbs...)

1. What kind of Juijitsu is it?

2. What do you currently do for training?

3. The answer to your questions will be better determined by just going to the classes and seeing how things go. There will likely be specific exercises you'll do in class which on a twice a week basis (?) will likely be more than enough to start. I think in most instances, just learning the new skill is enough extra work for a while.

Otherwise, congratulations!! on stepping up and doing something new like this. You should have a blast. Let us know how it goes.

When I started Judo/jiujitsu I was wiped after class for the first month or so, but we were doing a fair amount of sparring. Prior to that I was hitting the gym, doing alot of striking MA etc... but the nature of grappling works you in different ways.

You'll probably find your grip strength taxed from all the gi-grabbing and your shoulders/chest/back will likely be the most fatigued.

Remember to relax, take it easy at first and don't work with much power - get technique down first and last. The less power you have to rely on the better. Beginners always compensate for a lack of technique with brute strength, so when you get tired don't sweat it. It's all part of the process. You'll gradually learn how to roll relaxed all the while getting stronger.

Enjoy!

Just did my first day, had a great time. I'm not sure what kind of Jujitsu it is, and today was a bit scattered since the main instructor was not present. We worked on a lot of striking, counters, and some throws, not much grappling. I worked with a Judo black belt (taking the classes to learn better submissions and things), and learned an awful lot in a quick 1.5 hrs.

I definitely didn't use much force, and didn't work with much speed, tried to get the technique down first (and didn't want to get killed by the Judo guy!) Can't wait to get back in next work and learn some more... good times.
