Welcome Ko! I remember you from T-mag about three years ago. It's good to see you here.
When you have a minute I'd love to hear more about what training at Team Quest is comprised of?
How has your experience in striking styles served you in your present school?
And finally, has anyone ever taken down Dan Henderson in training?
Team Quest had three basic classes, kickboxing, submission wrestling, and crosstraining. The first is self explanatory. the second was where you learned the ground game. Cross training was for learning the transition from standup to ground. They would cycle through basic techniques and finish every class with freestyle sparring/rolling. Once you learned the basics, you could start going to the more advanced classes. If you were good enough, you could start training with the big boys.
Most of my prior striking stuff needed some serious re-tooling. The threat of being taken down totally changes the ranges that you work in as well as how some punches/kicks are thrown.
As for Dan Henderson, I never saw him. I did get to roll with Randy a few times though. Great guy.
Sounds like fun Ko. Certainly should be a fantastic training environment!

Great point Ko. I had the same experience. Once back in Japan my karate teacher wanted us to get some cross-training in & so invited the neighboring Judo club to come spar. Pretty much everyone got taken down real quick without even landing a single good strike. The lesson was learned and we began implementing more takedown defense and related strategies into training.
Conversly a few years later it took some time for some guys in my Judo club to adjust to strikes coming at them.

You have to get your asses out to my new gym. I'm gonna have kickboxing and MMA classes in there. Yay!
Grrrr...if you have boxing, then "maybe". Hehe :p That's my "stand up" fighting in me speaking up - still dig K-1 and boxing. Sigh.
But we are in the middle of talking about where to spend our next vacation. It was either Japan (again) or Venice, Italy. Now that you've brought this up, Massachusetts does seem so much more....exotic than those other places. Oh, I keed.
BTW, who's going to be coaching the kickboxing classes? Now, this is full-on contact kickboxing? Not that wimpy cardio kickboxing, eh?

There will be now fake, hippie kickboxing. My old boss will be teaching it. He's boxed as well. We're also looking to get some of the local BJJ guys to get in there. We'll see.
I've been to Venice. It's a damn swamp. Boston on the other hand.

Ah, "fake, hippie kickboxing", complete with hemp-based accessories like, gloves and sweatbands? And women not shaving their legs? Cool. I'm so there.
Currently I am studying Wado Ryu Karate under Sensei Alex Wraith, who is under the direction of Masafumi Shiomitsu Sensei, currently teaching in England.
Yup...trained under Oliver Brunton originally, then Paul Whinnery and Danny Corr. Very bunkai orientated.

Good stuff Gillian, interesting combination. Been bitten by the MMA bug? What brought you to JP's? Where you based?

I take every day as the best day of my life. I really couldnt have done any of it without my wife supporting me. Lifting is good enough for me now although some friends want me to open up a shop and train fighters in our area.

I am a former MMA instr/gym owner
My main instr. is Erik Paulson and have trained with Dan Inosanto, Machado bros., Ken Shamrock
In '99 I started taekwon do, quite because studio closed, picked it up again, quit after 6months because I moved. Finally 2 years ago I picked it up again. I would be testing for a blackbelt now if it wasn't for an injury from sparring that put me on "vacation" for over 3 months and so I'm missing the test and having a hard time returning to the level I was before the injury. On the plus side it made me reevaluate myself and hopefully I can take the blackbelt test in the fall.

Very new to the site but wanted to say hello and give my background.
I spent 8 years doing Shotokan with a mix of Aikido *which was an interesting blend for a balanced outlook on the traditional hard and soft*. From there I went to Emperado's method Kajukenbo for 2-3 years and after taking a break for the last year+ am getting off my butt and going back to the Kajukenbo school.
Nice to see a martial arts discussion board on a great fitness site, be well all
