I love it! Wireless martial arts... You rarely see that anymore. Those guys are some seriously skilled athletes! Not that any fighter would ever expend that much energy with all those acrobatics. One of the things I love about UFC (BTW, thanks for getting me totally hooked on that, Kuri), you get to see what style of fighting is truly the most effective in a true contest. No time or energy for theatrics. Someone trying that style would get his head knocked off by these Octagon fighters. Not to take away from their impressive abilities though.

I just love watching Capoeira (what the shirtless dude in the video is doing). The pure acrobatic skill + rhythm and style, not to mention the music, is alot of fun.

Yeah, Capoeiristas would and have gotten creamed in MMA matches.

I'm glad to hear your into MMA now JP. Just wait until you see your first show live!

BTW, Pride Fighting's "Shockwave" event from Japan on New Year's Eve is on PPV this week. I just watched it tonight - great fights!!! By and large the fighters in Pride are better than UFC fighters.

Lightweight Takanori Gomi & HVW8 Fedor Emelianenko were unstoppable machines, as usual.

Watching the movie brings me some childhood memories. It was pretty popular to see some capoeira circles doing demonstrations on the streets but I only saw some real capoeira fights a couple of times when I traveled to the northeast of Brazil and they had nothing to do with the acrobatic and dance you see on the movies and demonstrations. It happened on an open market in Bahia and the fight broke out with 2 guys really trying to kill each other. It has a lot more punching and open hand slap and of course lots of kicks, but rarelly you would see them doing acrobatics. It gets ugly and it was only over when the police showed up because soon enough someone would get stabbed or worse.

The demonstrations had a lot to do with the slaves trying to mask their training with dancing so the slave owners wouldn't know what they were up to. I like the dancing, it was nice watching it. I miss it all.

But these videos from the Kennedy Center in NY is the best Capoeira I've seen. A number of famous mestres from Brasil were invited for this event.

Yup, I am Kuri. I've even heard of stories of figts with people hiding blades in their mouths in case they get into a headlock.

I watched Ong Bak the other night, and as someone whos trained Muay Thai it was a treat to watch. A lot of flashy stuff to impress, but a lot of it was also solid fight moves. No wires, just a HELL of a lot of practice (watched the making of, he spent something like 3 years just practising the moves for the movie). He has a strong gymnastics background as well as years of muay thai training.

Tony Jaa is young and a rare treat in the martial arts movies. i really like the fact that he has no strings or wires and no stunt doubles. like the old Jackie Chan movies.
i lived in the Thailand for a little bit and began studying Muy Thai w/ an instructor there. let me tell you...it's not cake walk. most popular martial arts school in the US couldn't hold a torch to the training. i am not as solid i was then, but i still remember most of the moves.
i missed that so much and regret not continuing on w/ my training and the fact that my parents moved away from Thailand.
