yes, it is very, VERY thigh bone!! (you meant humorous )
It's based on the number of posts, though still funny. He technically IS a newbie to the board, but with his assurance that he'll post more, i hope it doesn't stay like that long! [/quote]Yeah, I went in and changed his title. Check it out now!

All,
The single most valuable tip is "Make it to the retreat next year?"
Many knowledgeable people there to share ideas and information with...Worth the time and money...Glad I attended.
The retreat was very fun, educational and entertaining as well. Thanks to JP for being a great host to a terrific event. I am really sorry I missed the mountain biking on Sunday...(I will need to ship my bike next time)
Nice to meet you All.
* Okay I am signed in...Went to JP's retreat (had to wear a name tag with "Lurker" as sumhead, beacause I had not joined the forum and/or posted. (This is First Post)

I wish I could have been there to ask my questions of Chad.
I'm hoping that maybe the answers came up in discussion.
1. In Chad's "Backwards Training" from MF a few months back, he advocates, using your 6 rep max, a 10 sets x 3 rep scheme, then adding 1 rep per week until reaching 10x5. Then retest 6 rep max again. Repeat. At the retreat, it looks like he talked about 6x3, adding one set as the weeks progress. How does he compare the benefits of each scheme?
2. How does his "Backwards Training" and/or this new presentation of it, fit into a fat loss program. I can definately see it fitting into a hypertrophy or strengh building routing, but I'm curious about how (or if) he'd incorporate it into a fat loss program.
Thsnks,
Roland

1. Both methods work the same. In either case the trainee is performing greater volume with each subsequent week. This approach works very well for hypertrophy, but not as well for maximal strength.
2. BT or any 10x3 is too demanding during fat loss. Check out my Next Big 3 or Triple Total Training programs on www.t-nation.com for a better alternative.

Ive just skimmed over the latter half of this thread so I havent really read everything but something did stick out. Many people are chiming about working no longer than 30 min or whatever for fat loss and whatnot.
Let the workload determine your time in the gym. Nothing is going to happen if you workout for 31 min instead of 30 or 25min as opposed to 30. If youre diet and rest are in check, you can workout for an hour and still lose fat. It just depends on your goals and whatever else youre doing.
I agree with Danny about his comment of adding cardio gradually.

GQ, they're basing their comments on Chad's lecture and it was a general guideline based upon his studies (the 30 minute number, BTW, was from the bginning of the first work set until the end of the last one). You should ask him - I think he has his research data to back it up.
Kuri, I don't yet know what I will do. The interesting thing that Chad talked about was lifting only 2X/week for optimal fat loss (it was 2-3 times/week as his rcommendation, with 2 preferred). This is what I was doing when I would usually ride in the summer and lift 2X/week to maintain. Right now I am lifting 3X/week until mid-June, then I'll have to reassess. I need to prioritize and I am not sure cycling will be priority#1 this year - although that may change. Even if it is, I will make sure to get 2 heavy days of lifting in per week as in the past.

Kaiser, so how are you feeling doing 3x/wk? Set/rep scheme?
You must be doing a fair amount of riding too yeah?
I ask because I've been hitting it 3x a week too but have felt it a bit much on occassion, not lifting what I should be able to do, and so dropped the direct arm work and do 4 multi-joint movements (now week 3 of Chad's TTT). I may just leave out the single joint stuff, keep it 4x6, 4x8, keep the intensity high. Felt better going that way yesterday so I'll continue to post and perhaps we can help each other dial it in.

Kuri: Based on my own experience, you're on the right track. I'll be doing, at most, five workouts in two weeks, and perhaps just two a week. Each will likely include four multi-joint exercises. This is while I'm in caloric deficit to cut the pork and while picking up my MA training leading up to our annual black belt camp & kumdo tournament in August.

Chad,
Thanks for the clarification. I'll check those out at t-nation, too.
Thanks again!

Thanks Chris C.
Keep us up on how your doing. Most I know who train competitively for MA do almost exclusively 12+ rep schemes - How do you feel on the matter?
Is your Kumdo tourney light contact sparring?
