LIVIN' LARGE: Minimizing yourself and maximizing your life! When you have over 100 pounds to lose it can seem impossible to get started in the right direction.
Well everyone, the day has arrive (in some parts of the world) our fellow 61DC'ers have begun their quest to reach their goals. In an effort to best support our friends in this Challenge, I will be starting a weekly thread where each day, week, whenever participants can summarize their Thorns (things that were not so positive that occured or things they need to work on need help with) and their Roses (what's going great in their lives and the Challenge). We will still use logs/journals for atta-boys and atta-girls but every now and then when you feel it is appropriate you can comment to someone else here. By now everyone should have their log in their sig (if you need help let me know). You will still need to post into your logs as many of us will be checking those too but less face it with nearly 50 participants, 1 weekly log with the "meat" is where we want to look. Checking in here and giving is a Cliff-Notes version of how things are going will link us to your log via your sig if we want to add anything.
Also, I will be starting a thread that is good or fun quotes from logs/posts during the challenge. Have fun with this. It will be fun to reflect on later. We are going to have some good times together.
Good luck with your goals.
1 Week Check in is here......in this thread....
Also, this thread will be open for the entire week. I quickly discovered that with the Globalization of the 61 Day Challenge with people all over the world, it would be hard to count up the start and end of the week, etc. I am not going to be a miser with your check-ins guys. I am confident that you'll be getting them done... and it is one less (but very important thing) that I need to look at....

Yes.. you'll check in here or a similarly named post. For instance Week 2, Week 3, etc as we go a long. Post how things are going and such...... but you'll want to keep updating your logs because that is where a lot of important information will be found. Consider Thorns and Roses and the Cliff Notes version of your log for the week or whenever you need to vent.
One thing I want to mention. Notice that I said Thorns AND Roses. The order is important for a reason. You should talk about things that were not as you wanted, etc and also about things that were good. Make sense?

I've got no thorn at the moment, but I did wake up excited to start things off right. My FINAL quest for the abs is here. If I can't get to 6 in 61 days... Well, come on, there's only two missing. I can do this.
Hopefully, the motivation will do us all a world of good. It was a good feeling to wake up to the Challenge. That's my rose.
At times it will be easy. At times it will be hard, it is these times that will make it a challenge. It is these times that make it worth doing. Overcome the challenges and look back on your accomplishments with pride. Even if you don't "win", reaching our own personal goals is a great victory in and of itself.
I hope we are all ready for the challenge. I know I am.

It's On and my official starting weight as of this mornings weigh in was 216#. I also have my first scheduled resistence session and my girlfriend has already offered her support by telling me that I should relax my workout goals as I have more important things going on im my life right now. Well not everything can start on a positive note. She tolerates my workouts but does not really take the whole thing as serious as I do. Good Luck All

The thorn this morning - walking out of the house without my oatmeal. But that's my own fault for not sticking it with the rest of my food.
So I did buy oatmeal this morning at the place in the basement where I work.
Last night I decided to see how many girly pushups I could crank out in 2 minutes - 26 girly pushups. I died the first time after 17. Cranked out another 5 and then cranked out 4 more.
Weighed this morning since its the start of the challenge. Officially back down to 254.2 after climbing up to 257.2. Some of that might have been bloat but some of that was not cranking down on my diet hard enough and grabbing stuff on the run. Soooo no eating out is definitely in the plan for me.

Good morning (errr ... afternoon) all! Off to a good start ... slept 9 hours last night albeit interrupted (hubby was snoring to beat the band, so I got into bed with my 3 year old ... who sleeps like I don't even know what!! Got up after a few hours there and went back with hubby ... you know it's bad when you can hear him through the earplugs ... and he's already sleeping on his side!! ). But it's going to be a great day ... I just went grocery shopping so the 'fridge is full of great eats ... I am going to have something when I'm done on here then go workout (! ) since I didn't get up this morning due to the sleep issues. But my parents have the kids for a few more hours, so I have plenty of time to get it done ... got my siggie all updated and my tracker uploaded to Google (thanks again Og for the tutorial!) ...
Whooooo hoooooo!!!! Off and running ... oh yea, and speaking of running ... I am signed up for the Solstice Sprint 5K on June 20th ... I'll have the kids in the jogger so my times won't be great ... I might even walk a good part of it ... but I'll be there doing it!!

I ignored the oatmeal-raisin cookies calling my name when I picked up my diet Dr Pepper this morning.

Be careful of those cookies. I took a look at the nutrition label on a so called healthy vegan cookie they had at my coffee stand and for a 2 serving cookie it would have been 440 calories. That had more calories than my entire breakfast. Plus who ever heard of a two serving cookie.

You misunderstand... unless it read "healthy." There's nothing inherently healthy about vegan food. Vegan = no animal products... so instead of a 70 calorie egg it's 100 calories of applesauce ... instead of butter it's oil or (sometimes) shortening...
Organic, natural, vegan... nothing specificly about any of that is what we'd consider necesarily clean and healthy. It's just greener than the ones from the keebler elves.
One nice thing... rarely will you find HFCS... so if you DO want to indulge... it's a nice way to without anything worse than simple cane sugar.
Whole foods has some awesome whole wheat cookies....
Thorn - When I got home my mum had cooked Pizza - not the nutritional start I wanted.
Rose - Went for a light Jog in the Pine Woods, i'm not including it in my log as it was VERY light but the sun was still out and was very pleasant

well today has been a good day overall. The only real thorn was the long work day in the sun and the slight lack of energy due to only getting 4 hours sleep last night and the shock of the TNT style diet.
As for roses, I ate clean all day and got my "Before" pics taken. I have till Jan. 2 to get into great shape for a week long trip to Mexico, this challenge is just what I need.
So good job on the great starts everyone, keep it up, build up the momentum and ride it through the end of the challenge and beyond.
*Edit* oh, and I will update my journal tomorrow b/c I am dead tired and I am going to bed, a good 9-10 hour sleep sounds real good right about now.

I am psyched for this challenge, Day 1 has been great!!
I'm so glad you joined us Van!! Yay for o2 girls!!
No thorns as of yet, my roommate is out getting ice cream for her nieces and nephews tho...but I WILL AVOID it! No workout today but it was a planned rest day...tomorrow will be legs and a leisurely swim with a friend in the afternoon.
My rose is that this challenge is finally here and I have specific goals that I have to think about NOT obtaining if I was to get off track. Great tool to keep me ON track!
Mostly roses got my NG (nutrition goal in) and an HIIT on recumbent (sp?) bike. I just recently discovered HIIT on a bike. I always had trouble waiting for a treadmill to get up to speed. However I feel like a work harder on a treadmill so I go back and forth.
Thorn- I'm craving beer. For many reasons I quit drinking August 2006 without any problems and "slipped" only once on vacation in March. Never really had any cravings until the last few days.
You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your f---ing khakis.-Tyler Durden
Thorn - totally missed the 5k this morning. As I was pulling into the location the runners/walkers were taking off. The e-mail talked about when the event started and not the registration so I assumed it was the start time for the whole set of activities including registration.
I'm really bummed this morning

Honestly, I should have listened to my instincts and stayed away from this one for my first on out since it was on the other side of town.
Oh well. Live and learn.

First two days have gone pretty well for me. No major cravings, although as usual for me the evenings are the hardest part of the day. I'm hoping the evening walks will help.
Roses, roses, it's all roses!!
Feeling great ... eating is well controlled without obsession ... workouts have been great!!
Life is good!
Paula, sorry about the 5K ... that's a bummer ... good to know for future reference that the signin time is different than the start time!! I've never done one, so I would have made the same mistake ... well, the day can only get better from here, right?!

Big, big roses -- went to my first horse show in 20 years on Friday, and despite a whole bush full of thorns that led to me being critically short on sleep (a big risk factor for my eating disorder kicking in), I ATE CLEAN.
They weren't all compliant PN (my plan) meals, so I gave myself 1 point for the day rather than 2, but I ate chicken breasts, carrots, salad, and chard frittata all day despite, shall we say, moments of serious temptation.
Thorns: I havent gotten in a workout since Friday not very pleased with myself (Half my fault, half the stupid gym I go to is hardly open at all on weekends and the hours open are pretty crap during the week too )
Roses: My eats have been great! I have stuck within calorie and macro's and am really proud of myself. As I have said in my log, eating and nutrition is the hardest part of any fitness challenge for me, so to start off well is a big fat bonus
Plan is to get to the gym when it opens tomorrow, so that I have plenty of time to get in my workout. :p

'Want it? Do it! No Excuses!' :p
I’ve noticed how easily people’s plans for working out can get derailed for one reason or another (gym is closed or otherwise inaccessible, family matters alter plans, traveling limits workout opportunities, etc.). So, it got me to thinking, we talk so much about staying on track with our eating by proper planning. Some of us keep “emergency” stashes of food in our vehicles (can or pouch of tuna, power bar, etc.) for times when the 2-3 hour feeding opportunity is fast approaching and we are not in possession of our next meal or are not where we can acquire one, we’ve learned how to order “clean” meals from restaurants by thinking ahead, and some of us are really good at pre-prepping and packing our food for the week.
All of these things share a common element—planning ahead , or having a “Plan B”. So, why can’t this same thinking carry over to our workouts? If you usually go to a particular gym to workout, why not have a back-up plan already in mind in case something unexpected gets in the way. Scope out other gyms in your area that you could go to on short notice so when you can’t get to your regular gym, you can simply drive to the next one and get your workout in. Or, have a basic set-up at home (dumbbells and a bench, etc.) to use on occasion when doing your regular routine isn’t possible. Have a few routines already thought out so you can just pick one and get to it. Obviously it won’t be the same, but something is better than nothing, and you won’t feel badly for missing a workout completely.
When traveling, try to find hotels that have adequate exercise facilities, or if none are available, have a few bodyweight routines planned out so you can do them in the comfort of your hotel room or on the beach or wherever you have a little room. Heck, even a vigorous walk is always possible where ever you are.
If you usually workout at the same time every day, have a back-up plan for when you have to reschedule due to unexpected life stuff. So, your child missed the bus and now you have to drive them to school, which is exactly when you were going to do your workout. Well, you already have to reshuffle your day, so why not reschedule the rest of the day to include your workout later on? Instead of thinking of it as a lost workout, figure out where else in the day you could fit it in and plan for it. Maybe there is something of lesser importance you were going to do later in the day that can wait till tomorrow so you can get that workout in.
With enough thought and planning, workouts shouldn’t have to be missed, right? Just some thoughts…
