Seriously, please don't giggle. I have this weird pain. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago while riding (MTB). It felt like my leg was going to sleep, I just thought I was sitting on the saddle funny or something. Then a couple of days ago it really flared up, like I had pulled something but it's right in the middle of my right glute, my hamstring is tight and my leg feels kind of numb. I can't think of anything I could've done to injure myself? I ran yesterday, it didn't hurt until I stopped. What the hell is this?

People are going to open this thread thinking you're talking about me!

Try this...
Cross the affected leg over the other, man-style. Hold the ankle in place with one hand and gently press the crossed side knee down (not below horizontal). Then lean forward. If you feel the pull in the same spot on your butt, you have a tight hip external rotator or 2 (or 4 ). Use this stretch to keep it loose and possibly free up any adhesions. You can also foam roll it if you have one. FYI, it'll hurt like an SOB when you do it.
You'll probably also need to mobilize your sciatic nerve. Do this by laying on the unaffected side, arch your back like a backbend, lay your head back and extend your leg out in front of you until your feel a good pull in your hamstring. Hold for a couple of seconds and then reverse all the motions by bending your torson forward, chin to chest, and pull you leg behind you and bending your knee as if to kick yourself in the ass. hold for a count or two. Repeat 2-5 times. Don't irritate.

Thanks Bill, I actually tried that stretch yesterday while trying to "stretch the pain out" and it hurt like an SOB. I just had no idea what that meant. I will try the stretches you suggested for the next few days. Thanks again.

Bill, I appreciate your prompt response to my original question. I think your online diagnosis was spot on since I did some investigating on my own afterward. I did not heed your advice as much as I could or should have. My own stubborness...I couldn't stand to be cooped up in my inlaws house all weekend sooooooo I jogged and biked.
Long story longer...My hip is still hurting, not bad but noticable. I've done the stretches consistantly but no impact exercise since Saturday. How long should I expect to be hurting before I worry about "seeing" someone? Thanks!

2-4 weeks depending on your tolerance. Usually at that point you need some help to get better.

Jeez, this amazing diagnosis almost makes me want to explain my nagging (3 years now and getting worse) pain in the ass to Bill. Maybe I should.... I've been thinking I'd just get to meet him one of these days. FYI Bill, I think it is either a nerve issue, or a problem with a 'deep six' (I think that was the name) muscle.

Kaiser- reading your lead in- I thought for sure you were going to pull and ODB and name a person! Update: I worked around the house a lot yesterday, we have a split level, up and down the stairs a LOT. I was hurting by the evening. BUT-the pain is actually better and the numbness has pretty much gone away-it doesn't feel like my leg is going to sleep all the time. We are supposed to do some light day hiking this weekend (we had planned a 2 day backpacking trip but thought it was too optimistic at this juncture) THANKS-I'll try to lay off for a while longer.

I felt the same good feeling after my last 5 hour hike.. and my Physiotherapist said that any ENDURANCE exercise is good for my hammies tendon. It's the shorter INTENSE exercises I have to keep away from.
