I don't know where this came from. I had no warning, and no activity created an accute pain, but two days ago, out of the blue, a mild ache started throbbing on my right hip (right up in the ball and socket joint). It steadily declined and by yesterday I could hardly walk. It became an extremely sharp pain that shot a jolt through my whole body when I tried to lift my leg. This morning it hurt just to get up out of bed. Great timing with the retreat this weekend. I am also supposed to go on a 20 mile bikeride. I am thinking I may have to cancel that. It doesn't seem to help if I do any stretches. I don't know if I need some kind of manual adjustment or if I need a cortisone shot to the hip, or just rest it and one day it will disappear. I have loaded up on anti-inflammatories and it isn't helping, or if it is, I shudder to think of how it would feel if I didn't. HEEEEEELLLPPP!

What specific movements are painful (what do you mean it hurts to lift your leg)?

What really REALLY hurts it at the moment is deadlifts. But it just hurts all day no matter what at the moment. It also especially hurts when I abduct my right leg. The pain is most definitely coming from the right hip joint. I went for a 20 mile ride today, and the pain was exquisite as I flipped one leg over the bike to mount it. It also felt like I was not going to be able to ride, but a few hundred meters in I was warmed up pretty good and I wound up having a decent ride. Hip still hurt when I got off the bike.
Sheesh, I'm gettin' OLD!

Yeah, I guess that makes too much sense for me to have thought of.

Wierd JP...I've had that type of pain in the past as well. For me, it usually goes away as quickly as it comes. NSAIDs don't do very much to dull it either. I just keep praying it isn't some degenerative hip disease (a la Bo Jackson). But it is very infrequent (maybe once or twice a year) and doesn't appear to be getting worse, so I always guess it is some injury (kind of the way a metatarsal (?) in your foot will start to hurt and you limp around for a day or two with no idea of how you hurt it).
Anyway, I had nothing substantial to add, except that you aren't the only one who has this type of unexplained pain pop up.

I have had it in the past as well, but usually in my left hip, never my right. I also worry that it is something degenerative, but, like you said, it clears up as quickly as it appeared and I forget it ever happened very quickly. I hate this. I AM getting old!!!!

Just you wait--mid-thirties is still spring chickenhood. Further surprises await you. Here's an example. Last week from Zappos (great mail order place for shoes) I got a pair of Aisic sneakers, which I thought were duplicates of a pair I already owned and loved. I wore them on the train from Philly to Boston. On arrival, my brother in law treated me to an excursion to the great stores in Copley Square. About a block into the walk it became apparent that the shoes weren't right. To avoid the pain they were causing, I altered the way I walked. About 20 minutes later the pain in upper legs, hips, and butt was almost unbearable. I don't think it would have hurt that much when I was 40, almost 30 years ago.

Still feels good, thanks to you. I am going for a bike ride today for the first time since I hurt it. Any specific warmup moves that you would suggest before I embark on my journey to singletrack heaven?

Make sure you reinforce normal length after your ride with some lunging and cross-over lunging. Maybe some loaded isometric split squats as well.
Good luck!
