Hi Bill (and forumites).

On saturday night my wife, who is an amatuer boxer collapsed in the ring, 1 minute into round 2. She had felt minor aches in her right leg when running during the week, and also a minor twist on her right ankle the night before the fight. On fight day she felt fine and proceeded with her bout.

*Please keep in mind that although choosing not to disclose her injuries (no matter how minor) was an error, she had trained 6 days a week for months for this oppurtunity. Its hard for them to back down.

So her ankle went in round 2 and as she fell she tried to fight the fall by keeping on her feet, but her knee gave as well, and down she went. The ring doctor adviced us to see a doctor with 48 hours. We have seen a doctor who has told her, she has strained the ligaments on the outsides of her knee and ankle. Take 3 advil every 5 hours and the usual ice and rest procedure. She is not to return to training until she can complete a full squat (unweighted/unassisted) without any dicomfort at all.

The doctor also informed her that she has "lax joints and ligaments", and no matter what sport she trains in, will always have a greater chance of injury. Too boot, there is no way to rehab this. (his words).

Bill can you shed some light on her situation. Should we get a second opinion, does any of what he said ring true. Have you ever heard of 'lax joints and ligaments"

As always thanks, I really need your insight on this one, for her.

Joint laxity in the female persuasion is quite common (at least more common than in men). Also, about every 28 days, it will increase due to hormonal changes.

Any chance her period got screwed up during training? This is quite common too. Intense training and lower body fat has a way of altering timing of hormonal cycles.

You can't rehab away joint laxity, it's genetic, but you sure as hell can rehab the injuries once the acute stage begins to subside. She can also get stronger and "learn" to improve stabilization through proper training.

Pet peeve warning...if the doc actually said strained ligaments, please kick him (or her) in the gonads with my compliments. Ligaments are sprained, muscles and tendons are strained. I feel much better now.

I'd get her checked by an orthopod ASAP just in case because she's an athlete and intends to return to sport. If there was any torque on the knee when the ankle gave way there could be more joint related injury beyond a sprain.

So your wife is chick boxer....

Hmmm...Hey David, I've never seen your wife naked but I've seen her box! (couldn't resist ).

Women boxers...what's next...women voters!!

Let me know how it goes and if I can offer further commentary.

Bill

Hi Bill, well shes limping around and looking alot better. She isnt even using the cruches now.

I spoke with her briefly about her 'cycle' and she says everything is normal. she did mention that this is normal for her to take injuries like this in sport though.

Ballet=knees
Karate=knees
Kendo=plantar faciitis
Boxing=ankles and knees
She can also complain about aches and pains after an active day out like walking or swimming. Sound like a good candidate for laxity?

She has looked intto some information regarding laxity and came across prolotherapy , she would like to know if this is a worthy path? We are looking into the orthopod toward the weekend.

Oh dont feel so privilaged either, on Saturday night, 250 people saw her box . As for voting, I feel your pain Mr Hartman, where did we go wrong.

Thanks Bill,
from both of us.
