I have pain on the outer left knee that is activated by using the stair climber or climbing a flight of stairs two steps at a time. In addition, squats also trigger the pain. As a result I end up babying my left side when I go up a flight of stairs. Also, if I play basketball and make a hard cut off the left leg, the outer part of the knee is irritated.

What exercises would be good to help develop leg strength to overcome this type of injury?

Note: This is not an ITB issue.
