OK, here's my problem: whenever we run sprints in baseball practice, or after hard running, my right shoulder starts to hurt after a few or them. it's my non-throwing shoulder, so i have no clue what it is. it started hurting during basketball, but that was later in the season and never amounted to much. it happened again today, so i figure i'd ask here to see if any of you guys know. it's just starts to hurt, but only during running. after running, when we do our push-ups, it now longer hurts. any ideas what it is and what i can do for it?

also, come to think of it now, when we do our crunches, the ligament that seems like it connects the femur to the pelvis starts to tighten up. over a year and a half ago, i pull whatever it is playing soccer. the ball took a weird hop and i ended up kicking it off the very end of my foot. as some of you might know, when you kick a soccer ball, it's usually better to kick with the inside of the foot. my foot was open, as i was preparing to kick it downfield with the area near my big toe. anyway, it bounced weird, i kicked as hard as i could (was playin defense and had a guy open downfield), and i ended up kickin it with the tips of my toes. lets just say my foot usually don't bend that way

well, i immediately felt the ligament being pulled. my coach, luckily, was on the first aid squad, decided that it was probably a pulled ligament and told me to have it checked out at the emergency room. anyway, the doctor at the ER told me that it was a pulled ligament and told me to not play for a week, take gym, etc. over the past year and a half, i've felt myself tweak it every once in a while-nothing major, was able to move again fine after a minute or two. anyway, is there anything i can do for this?

thanks for any input guys

Just to play safe, take it easy
Its not fun when a shoulder pops out (Believe me, I have helped my friend pop it back in and its so weird)
This is normally for improving posture but here is an idea that I think will help your shoulders but have never tried it.
Walk 3 miles per hour on a threadmill or around the block and cross your arms in front of you and imagine your pulling your shirt off, so raise your shoulders to the sky. Keep doing this until you feel confortable with your shoulders. I think this move will push your shoulder blades towards your spine so it may help you.
But as I said before, I have never tried it, it came to the top of my head when I read your post.

during baseball, i dont do anything with my right shoulder tho-thats the weirdest part. i'm a lefty so i'd understand if it was my left shoulder. but this is my right shoulder and it only hurts when we run the sprints-usually 20-40 yards. it also hurt in basketball when we would just run from sideline to sideline. i just don't get it. it feels fine till we start running. and it never hurts during games or simulated practices.

well even more great new for my shoulder: today in my baseball game, i was diving back into second when i reached out as far ans i could. it hurt a little to dive back and extend my arm that long, but to make matters worse, their second baseman, caught the ball and used his momentum to slide into my outstretched shoulder-kinda like what happened to derek jeter last year. yeah-that hurt. anyway, it feels better now, but i'm goin to ice it down again in a lil bit. i'm just still confused on why my right shoulder hurts while sprinting-it's not my throwing arm, and i haven't done anything weird to it-it just started hurtin while i was running one day.

It sounds as though the right shoulder pain has been going on for a while. You might want to get it examined by an Orthopedic Surgeon.

Hey Kevin!!

As a former college baseball player I know how valuable shoulders are even when it's your non-throwing hand.
I would highly recommend you go see an ortho immediately. You could have minor damage in the shoulder that is laying the framework for a major problem down the road.
What part of your shoulder hurts? Top/front/back? Have you injured that shoulder prior to the current pain? Do you sleep on that shoulder at night? Does it hurt when you lift? Does it only hurt when you move it or does it also hurt when it's sedentary? Does it hurt when you are carrying an object (ex.baseball bat). I make it clear to everyone that I'm not a doctor or PT but it will help your ortho with diagnosis and treatment if they have as much info as possible.

On a lighter side...maybe you just don't want to run sprints. I was a pitcher in college and when our staff had to run all sorts of injuries came out of the woodwork. "Uh...coach? My thumb hurts...can I do the bike instead?" I'm just kidding, but I'm sure you've seen that in your practices at least once.
Go get checked out and keep us posted on your progress.

nawww, i definitely wanna run the sprints -gotta beat out 3 older kids just to get some varsity time this year-only one of them is a true 1st basemen-the other one plays 1st, 3rd, LF and pitchs and the other they're makin into a 1st baseman cause after pitching he can't throw from SS. so, any chance i get to prove myself, i need to take.

i'll answer the questions here just for fun

its the front of my shoulder that hurts during sprints-its like where the muscle or ligament that attached the arm, shoulder, and chest. it started happening at the end of basketball-we'd be running sideline to sideline for a LONG time and it'd start to hurt a lot. it was at the end of the season and about an hour after practice, i'd be fine. it never hurt during a game or during any ofther part of practice-just towards the end of sprints. i've been very blessed and lucky to have had no major injuries in my athletic careers-just a couple sprained ankles, knees, and foot, but no breaks or tears; the occasionaly muscle pull, etc. nothing major.

it doesn't hurt when lifting or during anything else besides sprints. yes i do sleep on that shoulder at night often. either that or on my back-i've never been able to sleep on my left shoulder cause i was always afraid or hurtin it for sports (used to play GK in soccer, bball, and baseball). nope, don't hurt when i'm carrying anything or when i lift.

today, we ran 6 90 yard sprints. sprint 90 yards, jog back, sprint, jog back, etc. did that 6 times. it didn't hurt until the last sprint and that was only a slight pain at the end.

I'm having some other shoulder issues to but your problem sounds like one I've always had.

I spent time in the Marine Corps, and obviously, used to run quite a bit. I always had shoulder pain on long runs but never bothered to deal with it since it wouldn't last past the run.

Now that I'm older, I pay more attention. I've had plantar faciitis to work through, as well as something runners call a 'calf heart attack' (repeated micro tears). I've been able to work through those by changing my running form.

In that line, I notice shoulder pain when I run distance and allow my shoulders a broad range of motion. It's a natural instince for me to shrug when I pump my arms. Try running, while paying attention to inadvertent shrugging and see if you do any better when trying not to shrug.

Hope that helps.
