I have had a frustrating lower back issue for a while. It feels like after standing for a few hours (training clients, sometimes I stand for 7-8 hours in a row without a break to sit), my lower back (the erectors on both sides, I can't tell if its the spinalis or longissimus or all three parts)give me such a hard time, bending over hurts and so does walking and even sitting (but especially bending over).
Massage helps a great deal ( I go every other day after work), which leads me to believe it is a soft tissue or muscle problem. Could I possibly have an imbalance from standing or is it that my lower back is too arched in and that causes the stress on the erectors.
I have been avoiding twisting exersices and deadlifts and hyperextensions and started doing lighter front squats and one leg squats to make up for the lower weight. I have also been stretching my hips a lot.
Does anybody have an idea what could help and what am I doing wrong?
Thank you!

I've had similar problems also from standing for long periods. What I do is go through all the possibilities. Muscle imbalance, balance. Not enough protein in diet, add protein. Stretching always helps me, hold it for 30-60 seconds and do it throughout the day. Stretch hips, back, all core muscles regularly.

Galya,

You need to get Dr. McGill's book on Ultimate Back Fitness from this site: www.backfitpro.com

Thanks to both of you. Book seems nice, I'll get it at Xmas when we go to the US.
