I now have access to a horizontal leg press and was wondering how safe they are?

Background info on myself: I had a herniated disk when i was 14 which i had surgery for(trimmed the disk); I am now 18 and have been pain free since the surgery. Right now my leg exercise is pretty limited. I stay away from squats due to my less than perfect back.

Would this exercise be beneficial to my health and strength?
