I have a question about ROM in my shoulders.
What movments can I do to increase this and prevent any further injuries to my wings. I play
hockey about twice a week, and have noticed some streching type pain every once and a while when I fall. I assume this is due to a lack of upper movement in my shoulders. Any thought and Ideas are grreatly appriecated

thanks
Chris

Just a few clarifying questions, ChrisO:

1) Do you feel you do not have a full range of motion in your shoulders? If so, why, or what makes you think this?

2) How do you feel your shoulder range of motion is related to your injuries?

3) Describe the stretching pain (quality, location, what makes it better, what makes it worse, if it happens at any other time, and when)

4) When you say 'wings' are you referring to your shoulder blades, or something else?

I'm not saying that you don't know what you're talking about. I just think the clarification will help us help you more effectively.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my post
bryanc, as for clarification,
I find when I reach for things I usually get a pinching feeling in the top part of my shoulder as well as the rear. I know posture is a large part of my problem and I've started the neanderthal(sp) no more program yesterday to correct this. Also I feel I'm lacking in ROM because I can not reach my arms straight over my head without discomfort in my neck and shoulder blades.
Asfar as the streching pain, it usually occurs when streaching to reach a puck that is just out of reach or reaching for objects just out of reach.
It occurs in the (socket) area of my right shoulder. what makes it better? not reaching for things, which i know is not the right thing to do but it works.
whn I mentioned wings, I was just refering to my arms no area inparticular.

I hope this helps with the calarification of my question. thanks again for your response.

Chris

ROM problems in the shoulder are generally related to two broad categories: strength deficits and/or bony, or soft tissue obstructions. I'm not sure that just because your shoulders are hunched forwards that that would cause the symptoms you describe. The fact that you're having neck and shoulder problems could be either or both of those categories.

There is an excellent Sport Med clinic at Western. This is enough of a problem that you should go have it assessed so that you can at least rule out bony/soft tissue obstruction if it's not there. If you do in fact have something structurally wrong, then the 'no more neanderthal' program might not be very helpful at all.
