Bill -- I'm about to start some weight training with JP and I have some existing injuries I want to make better/avoid worsening. I'm very prone to tendinitis/bursitis/etc. Right now I want to focus on strengthening my shoulders and upper back. I had a cervical laminectomy several years ago, and they cut through the muscle at the top of my shoulder/neck; it's been weak ever since and I'd like to figure out how to get it strong again. I've also developed bursitis in the same shoulder, which has kept me from swimming lately. Basically, my question is, what exercises should I be doing to strengthen my shoulders/upper back and what should I avoid doing so I don't hurt myself further? Thanks.

A specific prescription is beyond the capacity of this forum especially in your case.

Important things to address...

Restore full motion of neck and shoulder as able
Exercises should be performed in painfree range
Scapular movement should be full and symmetrical
Start lighter than you think you should
No overhead exercise

Have JP give me a call after you are assessed. I may be able to offer more then.

Bill
