Okay, I have been feeling some pain on the top of my kneecap for about 4 weeks now. I have not done any lower body workouts to see if it would feel better. I worry that it is not getting much better. Here is when I feel the pain...

When I stand/walk, or run, no pain. The only time I have this pain is when I run up stairs and skip a step in the process. Or when I perform a squat and the knee bends to almost 90 degrees. It seem the angle and load on the knee cause this pain. I feel like I could work through the pain, but choose not to as Im sure it would make things worse. I can even ride my Mt. Bike hard off road without discomfort. And ideas?? I am pretty concerned since I am missing out working my lower half and it is hurting my fitness goals.

Thanks for the ideas!

So many things can be causing this (patellar tendonitis, chondromalacia, or maybe just a simple sprain) that it would be best to go to a doctor. They may intially just check you out, give you an x-ray (to rule out a bone chip), and tell you to RICE and take NSAIDs. But at least you will have gotten it checked out before it gets worse.

Good luck. Knee pain sucks. Knee sugery sucks more. Multiple knee surgeries suck much more!

Thanks for the reply. I guess in my head, I know I should get it checked out. Just surfing for a better idea of what it could be. Again, Thanks.

you've got symptoms that i basically have. doesn't hurt doing normal stuff like walking but, a little discomfort walking down stairs or up them sometimes. not to bad when doing squats, but, lunges are out of the question as well as running. anything where my right leg is supporting my body by itself, in a closed kinetic position.

had an x-ray done and discovered i have a bipartite patella (which isn't actually causing the pain, but can make you a little more prone to injury).

doc gave me some anti-inflammatories and i ice it once a day.

also got an appointment with an orthopedic in a couple of weeks.

found this article from alwyn's newletter that sounds close to my symptoms, but, gonna let the orthopedic make the call, since that's what i'm paying him to do.
