If you search for "shin splints" on this forum you'll find that it has been discussed on several occasion with some good info being passed on.
Most often it's a case of too much too soon. First, heal up. Some form of soft-tissue treatment (Active release, ASTM, massage) can be very helpful in relieving symptoms. Ice will help control pain. Stretch may help some as well. Perform calf stretching with the knee bent to emphasize the deep posterior compartment.
Next think progressively on your return to activities that seem to aggrevate the pain. Not everyone is prepared to run and jump or squat.
