I did something bad to myself, and I need advice
Yesterday I was down on hands and knees (planting daffodil bulbs, not ordinarily a perilous activity), when the phone rang inside the house. I started to stand up, but kind of twisted slightly to one side as I did, and the result was excruciating pain in my left hip. I fell back, face down, to a prone position and called for my wife. I lay there for five or six minutes before I could finally struggle to a standing position, using a shovel as a crutch.

I still hurt, although I can reduce the pain with Darvocet. The pain is mostly in the area of my left hip. The area is not sensitive to pressure, but any kind of movement involving change of position--sitting to standing, standing to sitting--is painful. I can't stand up without using my arms on a table or chair for assistance. Bending over is out of the question. The pain is considerably worse than the occasional flare-ups of bursitis in one knee.

What have I done to myself? And do I just wait for things to get better, or what? Also, is it a bad idea to use Darvocet as a palliative?

Did you feel or hear a "pop"? Any prior history?

From your explanation, I'd lean toward a sprain/strain injury, but I'd get it checked out anyway.
