Thumbs up

After my hospitalization and surgery (chronicled in http://forums.jpfitness.com/cgi-bin/...f=8;t=000018), and taking almost four weeks off from doing anything, and losing 10 lbs of muscle, I am ready to get back into it tomorrow. Today is exactly 2 weeks after surgery. According to my surgeon, I should ideally rest for another 3 weeks from anything too strenuous. Of course, this is the longest time in four years I've gone without exercise and there is something to be said for shocking the body with no exercise at all when it is used to exercise. I've been walking since day 3 and feel ready to begin again. I will alternate light biking days with bodyweight resistance exercises and then some high rep machine work for the next two weeks. Then after two weeks if all goes well, I'll begin a new program (most likely the King/Schuler program outlined in 'The Book of Muscle'). I need to eat and build back the muscle I've lost....I never would have thought that 10 lbs of muscle makes such a huge difference in the way you look and I hate being this thin.

Congrats and take your time...You may be surprised how your body will react positively to the time off.

Thanks Bill. Lou Schuler told me the same - that often great muscle and strength gains are seen after a period of deconditioning. I hope so.

For the first two weeks of resistance, I'm using Mike Mejia's TAP Workout, Phase 1. It consists of basic exercise of a circuit nature to get you used to lifting - full body circuits three times a week. I am going to need to do that after this layoff.

God, I feel like a total neophyte doing this! I'm starting in my basement because I'm almost embarassed to go to the gym and be seen on all of the machines! At least the home workout has you using DBs.

Kaiser, humbled back in the weight room.
