Thumbs up

New to your site. Just spent the last 45 min. looking at all of your different subjects and information. Need a different perspective on my problem. I've had several knee surgeries over the past 8 years. The most recent was last February. Had a new ACL put in my right knee. Had a few ACL repairs on the left knee. 4 years ago, I started lifting. I really was never a lifter, other than football and baseball workouts. I really got into this and actually won a competition at my local gym. Went from 30% to 16% body fat in 6 weeks. I didn't see the big deal, but the club made me feel like I was a "Frankenstien". I really felt great. I was taking EAS products (Myoplex, ZMA and their creatine product), Max Andro Plus and CytoMax. In Feb last year, I blew my right knee playing softball. During the pre-surgery consultation, they informed me that my blood work indicated I had Type II Diabetes. They also indicated that it might have been caused from all of the supplements I was taking. Since then I have been taking Glucophage for my diabetes and have taken no supplements. I now want to get back into the gym to show these young bucks that I can still blow back up these once 21" guns and beat this diabetes. I'm leary about taking any type of supplements for fear that it would "irritate" my condition. I have read that the Cytomax actually can help those who suffer from Type II Diabetes by increasing the output of the "good" insulin. Any information or suggestions that you could give me would be very helpful. I'm going back to the gym regardless, but would like to be able to use supplements in my workout routine. Thank you in advance...

Dan,

Sorry but I had to chuckle when you mentioned having a few knee surgeries as though it is just another part of your busy day. Congrats for stayin' in the game and your early succes (it is a big and fast drop in body fat)!

I think you'd be hard pressed to find any available supplement on the market that can have such a profound effect (stimulants excluded) short of putting some nutrients into the upper ranges of normal (assuming you're taking appropriate dosages). Most of the supplements are just rip-offs with superior marketing and little science. Think about this for minute. Would a company risk putting out a supplement that could cause diabetes? If that's the case, you are soon to be wealthy man. Everyday folks are diagnosed with diabetes and any number of metabolic disorders for no apparent reason. I'm not belittling your situation, but just stating the facts.

Anywho, why not focus on the most powerful supplement known to man...FOOD!

You can certainly take control over your blood sugar with a regular glycemic/insulin index controlled eating plan and your regular workouts will do wonders as well. My concern would be your orthopedic injuries. As long as you create a solid plan when you get back to the gym, I see no reason for you to not regain the "21 gun" salute.

What instruction did they provide you about your eating?

Dan,
I'm wondering about your multiple knee injuries. Have you had the same ortho for all of these injuries? Has he/she/they ever mentioned any kind of disorder with your cartilage (i.e. an osteo-chondro disorder, osteo chondro desicans)?
In your work outs, what kind of leg work do you do? Have your physical therapists ever sent you to someone for progressive strengthening?
