PS, JP:
Neosporin eventually causes an allergic skin reaction in about 20% of people. This develops after repeated exposures and can occur at any time. Since people use this on open wounds, it's no bueno to develop allergic contact dermatitis in and around the area.
IOW: don't use it! A very well-designed randomized trial involving a head to head comparison of neosporin vs vaseline showed NO increase in wound infections when used on surgical wounds created from skin surgeries with the use of plain vaseline; neosporin, however, resulted in a statistically significant increase in contact dermatitis involving the wound margins.
