Default Pain only at 1:30AM

I recently broke my finger. It is a wide break with a 30 degree bend (mallot finger is the term I think they used). I knew that I had injured the finger because it got swollen but there really wasn't pain associated with it. It wasn't until 1.5 weeks after the injury that I decided to have it xrayed in fact because it was healing funny. The Dr sent me to a hand specialist to have a cast made and she drafted this cast out of a strong material so I can continue to play football. She hyperextended the finger so that the crack was completely closed. It did not hurt as she put the cast on but that night the swelling increased a bit before I went to bed.

Then at about 1:30AM the thing felt like it as on fire. I had to get out of bed and pace and groan and after about 20 min of this the pain went away. The fire pain again happened to me the following night and again last night. It only lasts for about 20 min of pacing and cursing. A coworker said this was due to blood pressure dropping in my sleep. True? If so is there any way out of the experience. Not complaining mind you. I realize that I am pretty fortunate to only have this for 20 min a day.

BTW: This never happened before the cast was put on. I flexed the finger a lot though and kept it very fluid. Now all the muscles are still and mad.

No idea ... probably would help to massage the muscles up in your forearm (which is where the muscles that control your fingers live) ... I bet if you poke around you'll find some tender spots. Just massage those. Is your wrist locked into this cast?

Something as simple as your hand falling asleep?

If I sleep funny sometimes hand falls asleep... and with /my/ broken finger it hurts like a motha.

Nah... It is this itty bitty little cast because the break is on my distal joint. I can even partially bend at the knuckle. They put me in a really tough cast instead of splint so that I could continue to play football.

Now this sounds like it could be the problem actually. The blasted thing tingles and burns. Which finger did you break?

Just an update. Had the cast changed today and discovered the cast had a pressure point right where the bone was broken. This caused bruising and a nice deep cut even. Thus the pain... Now I know... It really should not hurt more after a cast is put on...

Completely didn't pay attention to the notification.

Left pinky. Had it in a splint keeping it straight for a few weeks. Then got in to see my normal doc for the follow up and he was, let's say, less conservative.

I gotta keep it buddy taped for a bit longer but I can take it off and move it. It's been more annoying than anything pain-like.

Glad you got it figured out.
