Default Degenerative disk treatments

Have had lower back pain on and off for years.....finally decided to go have it checked out as I plan to start running and working out.

Xrays show what doc diagnosed as a degenerative disk. Forget which number, but very low back area.
Start PT tomorrow and just wanted to hear from anyone else who may have had this problem.
Any over the counter stuff that can help with pain and stiffness? Any specific exercises? Surgery?

I actually teach a course/workshop on Reconditioning the Torso Stabilization Mechanism, and part of reconditioning process involves "attempting" to revitalize the disc body via cyclic compression and decompression cycles of specific exercises.

The Intervetebral disc is a very unique anatomical structure and understanding that anatomy and how it functions is important.

There are NO guarrantees that increased disc height will result and aging and daily habits tend to add to the deterioration.

However progressive application of these compression/decompression cycles tend to reduce deterioration and may even reverse the process slightly.

I might add that the spinal ligaments "do not" shorten to accomadate that reduced disc height and this can produce a laxivity in the spine allowing the vertebrae to slide more than normal, also not good.

No particular nutritional remedies unless you are mineral deficient. MSM, Glucosamine, chondroitin, Vit D, etc "may" be ever so slightly useful "IF" you are deficient, in any of them.

More important is avoiding relaxed seated inactivy with a relaxed torso.

And you should also focus on constantly maintaing "good" posture and semi-tensioned abs.
