Default Rolled My Finger

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has an idea about what I hurt and if it will just get better on it's own.

Yesterday I somehow managed to 'roll' the last digit of my middle finger. The last digit rolled forward and didn't hurt when it happened, but now the last digit doesn't quite straighten out when I outstretch my hand. There is a little swelling and pain on the top of the finger between the last and middle digit now. I can type okay and have no problems closing my grip or with grip strength. The only weirdness is my finger won't straighten back up. I hoping I just pulled something and my finger will straighten back up as it heals (looks sorta weird right now lol). Any ideas?

Looks like I found what happened. Back to the doctor I guess. This sucks!

That stinks, but the internet is amazing isn't it????

So much information literally at our fingertips (even when one of them is pointing down at an odd angle )

True, I went out last night with some friends and a couple of the guys saw my splint and both immediately said 'mallet finger sucks' LOL. They played sports in college and each of them had had it multiple times on different fingers. How I have managed to escape it for 30+ years I'll never know.

Gonna suck to wear a finger splint for 6-8 weeks. :/

Not sure if anyone else has experienced this, but it really sucks. The 'fix' is to hold the tip of my finger straight for 6-8 weeks (with a splint of course). If you let the tip of your finger drop even once you have to start over and your prognosis for a full recovery goes down.

Sorry about your finger.
I have nothing constructive to add except this is now on my list of things to avoid. If I knew what to avoid.

Basically what happens is that you tear the tendon that is on the top of your finger and holds the last digit out straight. The ortho said the tendon is only about the size of 2 sheets of paper thick. So, if you're trying to straighten your finger and have some force push the tip down it can easily tear (or if you get cut on the top of your finger, etc...). It's a common injury in sports, but can also happen doing something as simple as making the bed and catching your finger on the sheet.

I haven't experienced this but came very close when I cut my finger including the tendon. Fortunately it turned out that I cut it where the tendon was larger and so avoided the whole process as I didn't sever the tendon completely. Just a fraction of an inch lower I would have needed surgery. Even so it hurt like the dickens and took about 6 weeks before I could grip normally.

Are you seeing an orthopedic dr or a hand surgeon? I was referred to a hand surgeon after I cut my finger. Something to consider.

Best of luck with healing. It's amazing how much having an injured finger can affect activity.

I went to an ortho hand surgeon (at least that is what my insurance directory called him). X-rays were all negative, but I had guessed that since I had zero swelling. Now that I'm used to it the stack splint I have isn't as bad as I thought it would be. The biggest problem is that it's my middle finger and it seems that is where most of my grip strength comes from. I can't really do a good back or DL workout now. Owell, I have day count down going. 48 days and counting.... lol
