Default Soccer okay, but no squats?

I tore my patellar tendon, acl, and some meniscus playing soccer (foot got stuck as I was cutting inside).

I had two surgeries a month apart: first to reattach the patellar tendon, second to reconstruct acl.

It's been two weeks since the second surgery. Rehab is going well.

I am talking to my surgeon and he tells me: "We'll get back to playing soccer, but you can forget about lifting weights - especially squatting."

Does this make sense?

I am just a measly trainer/enthusiast, but I always thought that impact force from say landing after jumps in a sport is greater than that of a squat. Much greater?

Or am I missing something?

Why? Because my patellar tendon won't be able to take it. But it will be able to take the stress of soccer.

Does he mean forever, or just right now when you're only a couple weeks postop?

He might be wanting to you to strengthen at a lesser RoM than fully bent… not stretching the tendon so much, etc… and then improve from there.

Either way… I'd personally prolly take the advice of a good PT over the surgeon… from what I understand many docs in general and surgeons in specific tend to have this gross fear of people lifting heavy iron (but like a lot of people, don't think about how much groceries, children, or those boxes you have in the attic/basement weight). So… shrug.

Hmm...that's the activity that tore it in the first place.

As Aoife says, you'll be squatting down to pick up heavy stuff for the rest of your life - not to mention sitting down and getting back up.
If you are only a couple weeks post-op I'd wait to see where you are after you finish rehab and consult with your PT as you progress.

Playing soccer is going to stress your knees much more than squatting, especially if you start very light, and increase the weight very slowly to give everything a chance to scar and heal properly.

Ha do not listen to the no squatting part because squatting is a mandatory survival unit for human beings. human beings have been squating for thousands of years. so tell me when you go to the bathroom do you squat to get on your toliet. or do you levitate to get into your car? no you squat. But one piece of advice for you, do NOT use the leg extensions machine unless you want to keep your orthopedic surgeon busy

yup I think you can do the squat as long as it doesn't stress out.
