Default Squats and lunges painful for knees

I am just starting on the workout schedule (stage 1) in The New Rules of Lifting for Women. I have never done squats or lunges and whenever I do them I feel like it puts stress on my knees and after a while it begins to feel uncomfortable and they make loud popping noises. In left knee I also feel some pain. Are there any alternate exercises that I could do instead of squats and lunges?

See the link in this thread for lunges: Trouble with Lunges

And review the squat RX videos Squat Rx

I'm not a PT or even a trainer. So, keep that in mind.

However, I found that lunges gave me problems at first and I even tweaked my knee once doing them. But, once I figured out the correct technique I started doing them all the time. They no longer give me any issues.

My problem was that I was leaning forward on lunges and squats. You need to sit back and down into it, instead of leaning over your knees. Ask someone with more knowledge to coach you through them.

Thank you...yes, it was my bad form/technique that caused the knee problem. In past 2 weeks I have been able to do both excersises without any porblem. I took few sessions with a PT and when I complained the squats and lunges were hurting my knees, he just started to have me aviod them.
Jane in addition to the video that you posted following clips also helped a great deal:

Thanks again for all your help.
