Default Another Shoulder Thread - Surfing Related

Hi there, I stumbled across this forum looking for info on shoulder issues. I looked at some past threads, but I have to confess I don't really understand all the workout terms and what they are.

1. When did the pain begin?

2. What were you doing at the time? Or did the pain come on gradually over time?

It came on gradually. I surf quite a bit and that's the only real workout I do.

3. Where, anatomically, is the pain?

Front of shoulder, about 2-3 inches from top of shoulder, middle of arm next to top corner of armpit.

4. What does the pain feel like? Sharp? Dull? Aching? Stabbing? Shooting?

moderately sharp pain when doing certain movements. If I push on the spot it hurts.

5. Is the pain constant, or intermittent, or only on certain motions?

Only during certain motions - for example, pushing my hands together in front of my chest, or if I push something with my arm extended out, like closing a door.
6. What motions make your pain worse?

see above

7. What, if anything, makes your pain better?

Ibuprofin seems to help a bit, also when I go running it seems to lessen oddly (blood circulation?)

8. Does your pain radiate to any other part of your body?

Nope.

9. What things could you do before, that you cannot do now because of your injury?

Well I haven't tried too much, I'm resting.

10. What is your main concern regarding the pain and its consequences?

I'm worried it's a rotator cuff injury and that it will linger for a long time

11. Have you ever injured that part of your body before? If so, how?

nope, never

12. Is your pain getting worse over time? And if so, how much worse over what time period?

Yeah I noticed it coming on a week or two ago but didn't think much of it. It didn't hurt too much while paddling, maybe slightly, but more when I'd push my upper body off the board to sit on the board or pop up.

Basically I'm resting it. It has been the same for a few days, today seemed fractionally better. I want to know if I should ice or heat (both?) and if I should stretch? Should I do any strengthening exercises now or wait?

Thanks a lot everyone. I really don't know what muscle it's affecting, even after looking at a bunch of musculature diagrams

Try a search for impingement. There are lots and lots of threads (and advice).
