IT and misc Quad pain - Acute
I have just found this forum and I hope it can help. I have looked around this forum and have googled some of my issues to no avail. Here we go:
I am an amateur cyclist who races every weekend during the racing season (March - September). I put a lot of miles in during the winter months and ramp up intensity starting in February and March every year. I take it very seriously and a good part of my life focuses on the training and prep for a race.
For the past two years, I have been having acute pains located throughout my quad area of both legs, but mostly my right quad area. The pain comes and goes throughout the year, usually happening in spring. This pain usually occurs while walking or during my warmup while cycling. It comes on more while walking down steps it seems. This pain is temporary and does not last the whole season. In fact, it comes and goes but when it comes, it's very bad and very painful.
This year I have felt very tight IT bands for about a week before this came on the other day. I could feel my IT bands twinging throughout the morning before they 'flared' up and I was limping around for the rest of the day. I was trying to keep on top of it with some stretching but was not as vigilant as I should have been.
After my flare up, I concentrated on stretching, foam roller, massage for the next several days and it did help. However, the tenderness moved to the interior area of my quad (adductor area). After working that area, the pain has now moved to the top surface of my quad (perhaps the rectus femurus?). So..my point is the sharp pains are moving around my quad area.
As I said, this has happened to me in the past. In fact the same time last year (spring) as the weather changes and my intensity also increases.
I've been staying off the bike the entire week and am loosing valuable training time. To top it off, the weather is finally warming up and I'm motivated to ride more than ever.
One other thing I've noticed is that if I put in a lot of volume or intensity followed by a couple to a few days of inactivity, it increases the chances of a flare up.
I suppose my question is if there is an actual name for this and what more can I do to suppress this?
Thanks for taking the time to read my post and responding if you know anything.
Best
