Default Neck pain/injury

1. When did the pain begin?

When I lifted my head off the pilow and heard a pop. I was immediately in pain and couldn't move my neck to the right. (yesterday morning)

2. What were you doing at the time? Or did the pain come on gradually over time?

I was sleeping and heard a noise, so I lifted my head and POP!

3. Where, anatomically, is the pain?

on my right side of my neck.

4. What does the pain feel like? Sharp? Dull? Aching? Stabbing? Shooting?

sharp pain when I turn my neck to the right, otherwise just a "stiff" or "sore" feeling.

5. Is the pain constant, or intermittent, or only on certain motions?

mostly just when I turn my head to the right.

6. What motions make your pain worse?

turning my head to the right, down or backwards.

7. What, if anything, makes your pain better?

not moving my neck too much.

8. Does your pain radiate to any other part of your body?

no, but I did have tingling in my right arm hours after the incident, but not since then.

9. What is your main concern regarding the pain and its consequences?

My main concern is that I herniated a disc. I was told last year that there was possibly something going on w/ the c6/c7 disc, but had an x-ray and all was normal. The dr. did not request an MRI.

10. Have you ever injured that part of your body before? If so, how?

I've had some neck pain, but usually from lifting too heavy or poor posture at the computer.

11. Is your pain getting worse over time? And if so, how much worse over what time period?

no. Today I have more range of motion than yesterday. Feeling much better, but worried about the loud "pop" and immediate pain.

quick update.... today I have even more range of motion... I'm really hoping this is just a strained muscle and not a disk issue.

Has anyone had this happen before?

Sounds like a facet lock.
It should continue to get better.
Use heat or ice for comfort.
A trip to the chiropractor or osteopath would fix it instantly.
