Default Scoliosis - Need to alter exercises?

Hi!

I just started the NROLW and am loving it!

I have fairly severe scoliosis with three curves in my spine (double-S) and wore a back brace for 24 hours a day for 6 years. I do not normally have pain in my back, but do have lower back pain on occasion (not work out related). I assume I should not put any weight on my shoulders, back and neck... right? Should I be altering any of the exercises in the program or avoiding any of them all together?

Thanks!!
Mary

I'll need a bit more information, and likely some photos as well.

How old are you?

When did you last see your physician and/or physical therapist regarding the scoliosis?

Besides bracing, were you ever given any exercises for your spine? If so, what were they? And do you still do them?

Photos ... rear view (ideally no shirt) standing tall, and bent forward (like touching your toes)

Hi Julie,

I wore a brace from age 12-18 and am now 32. I last saw a physician about it about 4 years ago. We took xrays and things looked the same, but he did not tell me to do any special exercises. They have always encouraged me to stay active, however. I dont think I can provide a photo, but if I bend over, you will see a slight hump on my right side and my hips are uneven (left higher than right).

Thank you!

Okay.
Was there anything he told you to avoid doing?

What makes you think that any of the NROL exercises need to be modified?

Things like squats, where you need to put weight on your shoulders and spine, worry me. I have been using dumbbells for those instead, but if there are better ways to modify that, I am all ears. The only thing my doctor once told me to avoid was water skiing and ski jumping because of the pressure on the spine.

Dumbbells or bands are a good substitution for barbell squats. Or you could just do front squats ... honestly it is difficult to say without seeing you in person!
