Default Ankle Popping and Knee Surgery

In May 2008 I had a lateral retinacular release done on my left knee, and then August 2008 my right I have been going to physio for my knee. But randomly one day, as I was walking down some stairs, my left ankle started popping every step I took down with my right. I went to physio the next day, and she told me a tendon was off track, so she popped it back, and gave me some exercises to do. It was fine for about two weeks after than. But then, it started hurting and felt really loose... so I went to physio and told her, and she popped it back and gave me some more exercises to do. Ever since that week, I have been having her pop it back every week for about 4 weeks. She said something about me having an instability. I also read somewhere else about when a certain ligament was injured it let the ankle tendons go off track.. but I don't really understand what is going on. I am curious to know if my surgery, where they cut my ligament, and this weird ankle-ness are related more than I thought. Anyone have any ideas?

Hard to know if they are related or not without in-person examination. What does your physio say?

well, she said that I have in instability in my ankle, but I just read last night about that tendon. It is popping again, but luckily I have physio tomorrow. But I guess my question is, is it possibly that my lateral retinacular release could have brought this on somehow?

It seems unlikely unless your surgeon was really bad ... but I suppose anything is possible. I would guess that it is more likely that the lateral release of your patella altered your mechanics enough that the ankle issue (which was likely present before) rose to the surface.

Alright. Thats good to know. Would you recommend actually seeing a doctor? Or is my physio therapist going to know enough to help me...

I would talk to your physio about and and see if she thinks you need to be evaluated by the surgeon.

This week at physio, I asked her about a constant pain at the top on the side of my foot. She felt around my foot a little and said that the tendons in my foot attatched to my toes are really short, so my toes curl up, and that was causing the pain. She is now gone on holidays, and I wanted to know more about that.

Did she show you a stretch?

ya, she did. I pull my toes towards my foot as far as I can, and then push against it with my toes. I'm just wondering partly what the stretch does, and also why it does that and what else I can do.

Why don't you ask her? That IS what she is getting paid for ...

she is gone for the next week, and I am in quite a bit of pain right now. I'd rather not wait... thanks for the help though!
