New to the forum, so Hello...and uhoh. 12 weeks post injury, knee "buckling" during basketball game. Very limited range of motion for two weeks post injuryy (fluid?). Now just a generic instability/dull ache when in certain postions. It is difficult to recreate the pain, but definite tightness and feeling of fullness in knee. I took two weeks off as I was finishing up FLII and am now 3 weeks into Hypertrophy I (as well as sticking to a strict ibuprofen schedule).
My problem seems to be I am able to squat/dl with minimal problem, but lunges/BSS/Step ups ore anything that isolates one knee are very unstable(and somewhat painful) and I do not feel comfortable going heavy which seems counter-productive going into hypertrophy phases. I was thinking about substituting for BSS and Step ups??? Any thoughts??????? Am I risking further injury at this point? or delaying full recovery? Thanks in advance.
I agree ... and where exactly is the pain? Did the knee lock up at any point? It might help us to know better what is going on if you answer the questions in the sticky at the top of this subforum.

Ok, never injured knee before. Playing basketball, stepped out and just buckled...felt like I tore every tendon/ligament all at once. Walked it off, home to ice, and then just had internal swelling (joint felt full of fluid, but no visual swelling). Definitely a dull achy fullness daily (worse in pm after standing for long periods) and generic shooting knee pain when twisting or going deep during isolating knee moves. Also painful when trying to navigate sidehills. Haven't run or cycled since injury. I assume I'm probably favoring it on squats by doing more work with my left knee.
I did have an orthopod casually examine it while at work. He xnayed any chance of ACL, MCL involvement. His best guess was patellar tendonitis, but I've had tendonitis in an elbow before and this feels very different and I was doubtful of its acute onset? Also, he was not able to recreate the pain through manipulation or palpation. Does this help?

When he examined your knee, did he just do the test where he tries to shift it to see if the ACL is torn? How strong are your legs? When my surgeon examined me he had a hard time determining that my ACL was torn because of leg strength. It took an MRI to say for certain.

Lots of internal knee swelling ususally = ACL. And depending upon your ability to relax while in pain determines the accuracy of a Lachman's or Pivot-Shift (if your muscles are guarding, then it will give a false-negative). But you say it felt swollen, but didn't look swollen, so that would probably mean not ACL (as ACL tears usually result in a knee that looks like a balloon). Could be meniscal. Are you planning to see a doctor in person (with an actual appointment )?
