Default Shoulder Problem... help!!!

Hi folks, a first time poster In Ireland here.

I have had a problem with my shoulder in recent months but it has got worse in recent weeks. I lift weights regularly, nothing heavy , i'm no body builder, but have been experiencing pain in my left shoulder and some clicking. The pain I think is at the rear, the clicking as far as I can locate is on the top of the shoulder. The pain is apparent during excercise. The clicking occurs when i put my hand over my head. There is only a very slight loss of power, more precautionary on my part I feel than anything. Just wondering what my course of action should be. I have been during some rotator cuff strengthening excercises this week, but what more should I do, and is it even my rotator cuff?

Thanks in advance

Mathieu

muscles that are in your upper back...

your rotator cuff muscles...

What hurts or is tight? Keep in mind that there is a difference between those two. When you go to touch your muscle and it hurts right away, then thats pain. If you go to touch your muscle you feel that is bugging you and there is no pain, then it is probably just tight and needs a good massage. However though, tightness for too long can cause problems. Always stretch after you workout and always warm up good dynamically before you work out. In my case, I have always had tightness and never pain even if I play softball all the time. I always massage my muscles and spend a little more time on a muscle I feel is tight.

In your case about the clicking in your shoulder. It can be a cartilage problem. Also, read this article called "The Clicking Shoulder". The Clicking Shoulder | chiroweb.com I have clicking knees (no pain) and I am still trying to get rid of it because it is annoying.

The clicking is likely from less-than-ideal scapulothoracic rhythm (ie how all the muscles that connect your shoulder blade to your body work together).
I would lay off the RTC exercises and start doing some lower trap and serratus anterior exercises.

You may have a rib out of place which is throwing the rest of the frame off. You might need to have that realigned.

I had a similar problem, but in both shoulders. Around 3-4 weeks ago I posted a similar question and had some great responses (do a quick search). After 4 weeks, the pain in my shoulders is almost gone.

-I stopped doing all forms of the bench press. For pressing exercises I performed elevated pushups, swiss ball pushups, and medicine ball pushups.
-I added scap pushups, face pulls, and a few other db shoulder exercises.
