Default Angioedema

Hi again,
I've got a new client with angioedema when she sweats.

She breaks into hives which are itchy when she sweats. That she can deal with but if she keeps exercising, her eyes (well, the tissue surrounding the eyes) swells up and she has ended up in the hospital...

I'm writing on here in case any of you have heard of anything that is helpful for this condition. She has already been to doctors and specialists with no solution (in Spain).

I know this forum is probably not the best place to find a solution for her, but I thought I'd try my luck just in case one you out there has dealt with a client/family etc with this condition.

Thanks,
Kaisa

Sounds like cholinergic urticaria. Unfortunately, this lady should never exercise alone; some treatments that may be beneficial include daily antihistamines such as zyrtec/claritin as well as a beta blocker.

Bad thing to have if you want to be fit. I wish I had more to offer. Here's a link to a good website with info.

What about food allergies?? This used to happen to me as well. I have to be very careful what I eat now not to trigger an allergy attack. It only happens when I get hot and sweat. Like running. It's exercise induced allergy attacks. I read about it in Runners World on line a few years back.
I think I know my trigger foods so I stay away from them if I know I'm going to be exercising ( I can eat them normally if I'm going to be sitting on my ass all nite!) and haven't had as many attacks.

So, would swimming be a good exercise then? As it goes ahead and keeps your sweat washed away… And therefore perhaps water aerobics and other aquatic exercises?

Thanks for the responses!

tkinsley, good link for some basics for me to understand better this lady's condition.

twixxi, I'm so glad you posted! She is signed up to do our detox diet in january so perhaps we'll find a guilty food. Would you mind sharing your trigger foods?

Aoeifi, I'll ask her about swimming. Sounds like a logical solution.

This woman said she would invite anyone who can help her find relief to dinner. I'll let you know when to start making plane reservations.

Salut,
Kaisa

So far that I know of is tomatos. I had allergy testing a few years back cause they couldn't figure it out and I seemed to have remembered eating pizza before running (not the smartest choice...lol) and then I had an allergy attack. I told the allergist that I thought it was tomatos and he tested and I came up positive. They don't do full on food allergy test any more it's too time consuming...at least that is what they told me.

Also maybe morning appts would work for her?? So not alot of food sitting there digesting. The doc put me on 2 months of H2 blockers (I think for heart burn???) Then an OTC antihistimine like Reactine or somthing like that.
