Default Plantar Fascitis and Lifting

I was recently diagnosed with PF. Doctor told me not to do anything with impact like running but didn't seem to know anything about lifting. I currently do 3, full body workouts but want to make sure things like squats, lunges, etc aren't going to make it worse. Thanks for any info.

I'm very interested in the responses you get to this since, though technically undiagnosed, I am pretty sure I have this too.

Talk to LD and Julie. I think she just got him out of that.

shouldn't be an issue unless your pf or lifting are more dramatic than most.

Lay off jumping activities and you should be ok

You need to stretch. A lot.
Calves, hamstrings, quads, glutes, hip flexors.

No impact exercises. So static lunges/split squats are better than walking. Step ups are okay as long as you control your landing. etc.

What are your arches like? You might need inserts (custom or OTC).

Mine's much better.

My arches are pretty collapsed/flat feet. Here's what I did.

Lots of stretching the calves and hammies.

Rolling a tennis ball and frozen water bottle on bottom of my foot.

Motrin.

Arch supporting insoles (I like Superfeet or Powerstep). Real ones, not the cheapo half length ones in the market.

No running or jumping (like no jump rope).

Those gel heals only help the pain, they don't actually help to fix anything.

Don't go barefoot.

Be careful when you first stand up in the morning or after a long time sitting. The PF will be relaxed, and sudden weight will hurt.

Julie what about regular squats would the be ok? The arch is a bit sore and achy but not the sharp pain like I feel in the heel. I do have Superfeet ortho's in my workout shoes but not in my regular shoes. Probably going to have to sacrifice fashion for comfort for a while until this heals. I wore my running shoes all day today and it felt much better.

LD thanks for the input. I am doing the ball rolling and frozen water bottle rolling and those both feel great. How long has yours taken to heal? Ever take any meds? My doc gave me an RX for Voltaren. I took it the other night when it was hurting worse than ever but it made my stomach kind of yucky which I understand is a common side effect with those drugs.

One of my basketball buddies was given a boot type thing to keep his foot stretched while he sleeps. His pain was worst when he first woke up.

Orthotics and fish oil supplements helped me.

Once I got serious and got the REAL orthotics/insoles and stretched regularly, it still took a couple of months. But, I got IMMEDIATE relief from the insoles. It was amazing. After a few days, I had to remind myself not to jump and run.

Now, I'm paranoid. I get what's probably normal foot pain, and wonder if it's the PF. I don't run much, but I have run a 5k without any PF pain. I've jumped rope once or twice, but I'm not ready to push it.

I only took motrin, so I'm not familiar with that medicine.

forgot. Like Bill mentioned, I also have something to keep my arch stretched at night.

Foot Express: PFO Strap (Plantar Fascia Orthosis)

My doctor told me about the version that keeps your ankle at 90 degree, too. He told me that these are newer and just as effective. You can also wear this during the day, so it works under a shoe when sitting down, too.

This is far more comfortable than the version that keeps your ankle at 90 degrees, which can only be worn without shoes.

That does look better than the big boot things! At this point I am willing to try anything reasonable.

Voltaren is an RX anti-inflammatory like Celebrex, Naprosyn, etc but so far it is messing up my stomach so not too thrilled about taking it. Might stick to the OTC stuff.

I don't know the answer to your question about lifting. I am new to this.

I did have PF for about two years before it finally was so bad I could barely walk in teh mornings and I had to find out what the problem was. My doctor told me there was surgery, but that it was not always effective, blah, blah, blah.

What fixed it was that I got a new pair of shoes and I liked them enough to wear them all the time. They are dansko brand. I got the maryjanes with a thinner sole than some have, but they are all supposed to be great for your feet. I would highly recommend getting a good quality pair of shoes, even if they are not the prettiest around.

Good luck with it. I remember how bad it hurt... all the time, but especially upon waking.
