Hi, everyone. I'm a 50-year-old woman who's been lifting for about 7 months. I just broke my right ring finger playing volleyball (I know, bad idea), and it needs to be splinted for 4-6 weeks. I have full movement in the thumb and 1st two fingers, and the pinky is free. Obviously deadlifts are out, but does anyone have any thought about alternative exercises I might be able to do so that I don't compromise my strength gains too much? I've been doing squats, deadlifts, bench and shoulder press, rows. and so on, all with barbells.

Why is that a bad idea? If more 50yr olds got off the couch, there would be less debilitated seniors.

Thanks for any advice.
I think DB work might be difficult since you won't have the other hand to help stabilize, so stick to a full bar.
I think most pulls are going to be difficult, but I could be wrong. You might need to go to isolated in the interim, at least those in which your palm helps to support the weight, such as curls.
Not much you can do about pull-ups/pull-downs, but if you stick to bilaterals, you should be able to still gain on a synergistic level, so pull-downs might still work.
This might be a time when machines are a good idea.

Yes, I was thinking about machines. I don't have much experience with them, but I'm concerned about losing control with a barbell. Though I was thinking perhaps this would be a good time to use very light weights for squats and try to work on depth.
Thanks!

Maybe she meant that it was a bad idea to break her finger?
I'd prolly try stuff out with light weight to see what I could and couldn't do, and try to go from there. Any movement that can't be done, try with machines to keep some kind of balance in the workout.
Thanks, everyone! I'm going to explore the machines tomorrow. Straps might be worth trying too.
By the way, I only said volleyball was bad idea because at least four of us on the team have ended up at the hospital in the last few months. Volleyball has a surprisingly high injury rate. It's a lot of fun, though, and I'm sure I'll go back to it.
