Prolotherapy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thoughts?

I have a buddy that dry needles and self injects blood into soft tissue and he swears by it, but I'm too chicken shit to do it.

I may go to a place locally that does it for my shoulder. I'm too scared that I'm going to damage nerve tissue.

Some people swear by it, and there are a few sport med docs in Calgary who just do the dry trigger-point needling without the injection.

My osteopath (whom I respect tremendously) does this ... but I've not had it done. He did mention it once, but I responded well to his usual treatment and some strengthening exercises so it wasn't needed.

Hey Everybody,

Has anyone had prolotherapy? Just looking for a couple of first-hand accounts from athletes.

Thanks,
C10

I actually had this done by a doctor several years ago for lower back/sciatic issues. I've heard from people who thought it helped; it did nothing for me and it may have done some damage, not sure. I don't think the doc assessed the underlying situation well enough, and it wasn't the right treatment for me. I believe it was mostly saline that was injected.

Thanks for the information, Zoey. Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you.

Even the anecdotal evidence behind prolo sounds sketchy. I'll definitely proceed with caution.

I had prolo done on my knee. I suffer from a patellar tracking disorder and have had chronic patellar tendonitis. While prolo will obviously do nothing for the underlying mechanical problems of my knee, I do believe that it has helped improve the tendonitis. It is a somewhat long process so you will have to be prepared for incremental gains. Also, I would warn that the injections are somewhat painful. At least they were for me.

I did the prolo along with a specific rehab program developed by a PT who consulted with my doctor. It is difficult to say how much of the results were from the prolo and how much was from the rehab or a combination thereof. I can say that my knee pain is much improved, so for me, it seems like it was beneficial.
