Default Glute/Hamstring pain

Hi all,

This is my first time posting. A little over a week ago, I was working on some gymnastic exercises and I felt a sharp pain in my leg that I've never felt before. To describe the pain....

1. It was over a week ago that this first occurred, and it was at its worst when it started
2. I was attempting what breakdancers call a 'pike', or in capoeira terms, an au batido (in english, broken cartwheel). In layman's terms, I was trying a handstand on one hand that requires I kick the opposite leg over without falling through in a cartwheel.
3. The pain is in the right leg, between the hamstring and the glute in the back.
4. The pain is fairly dull, but tends to sharpen if sat on.
5. The pain is very dull constantly, but can sharpen with certain activities.
6. It sharpens when I lift the leg, especially in a point, or have to make a wide range of motion. Being a martial artist and a dancer, this part is severely annoying.
7. So far, only staying off my leg makes the pain go away, or lying down. I can swim without pain, too.
8. It doesn't carry over to any other parts of the body, thank goodness.
9. I could kick high and dance, and practice gymnastic movements.
10. My main concern is how much of a damper this will put in my training, as I train for dance competitions.
11. I've never injured this part of my leg.
12. The pain doesn't get worse, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better.

To be more specific, I was reaching behind me from a standing position with my right hand. I kicked my left leg over and launched upward with my right leg, and the pain shot through. So what did I do? What any zealous aspiring young man does... I waited a few minutes and tried again. Needless to say, it hurt worse than before, but luckily, it hasn't hurt so bad since. Any advice on how to treat this and rehab it would be great, thanks!

Sounds like you might have a hamstring tear.

Ice and rest are the only treatment really (in the acute stage).

I hope to God it isn't too bad of a tear! Forgive me, I'm not the 'sit on my bum if I have to' type, but I appreciate the help. The ironic part is I started having pain in my hip flexor yesterday along with the regular pain, could I be worsening things?

Could be if you are not taking some time off to rest it and allow things to heal ...
