Default pain in foot, shin and calf

1. When did the pain begin?
Shin and Calf: On and off over the last month.
Foot: after going for an extremely long(24km) walk one day last week

2. What were you doing at the time? Or did the pain come on gradually over time?
Shin: the pain only occurs when i'm on a walk.
Foot: the pain came after an extremely long walk, went away after 7 days of rest, and is back again after going for one walk
Calf: when i go from sitting to standing/rest to movement

3. Where, anatomically, is the pain?
Shin: left leg, from base of ankle right to knee cap
Foot: the area right below my big toe on the bottom of both feet
Calf: left leg only, mostly mid calf area

4. What does the pain feel like? Sharp? Dull? Aching? Stabbing? Shooting?
Shin: SHARP! it friggin' hurts! it tenses up so much that it when i go to stretch it, it feels like its going to rip right out of its insertion point
Foot: aching - it feels like there is a bruise there that is aggitated every step i take
Calf: a sharp pain that dulls as i move more

5. Is the pain constant, or intermittent, or only on certain motions?
Shin: only when on a walk and usually for the first 20min of the walk only
Calf: only when i get up from rest/sitting, but not always and there doesn't seem to be a certain way that i'm sitting that causes it
Foot: dull pain when there is no weight on it, but good amount of pain always when bearing weight

6. What motions make your pain worse?
walking

7. What, if anything, makes your pain better?
Shin: stretching. what i've been doing is stopping intermittently in the first 20min of my walk to stretch - i'm not sure if it's helping or not. the pain seems to go away on its own once i've walked for 20min
Calf: stretching or more movement
foot: not walking

8. Does your pain radiate to any other part of your body?
No

9. What things could you do before, that you cannot do now because of your injury?
mostly go for walks. i still am, but i have had to cut back frequency and length by more than 50%

10. What is your main concern regarding the pain and its consequences?
i worried that it might be the sign of something else (maybe bad posture?) that needs to be addressed to fix it

11. Have you ever injured that part of your body before? If so, how?
i injured my IT band in my left leg 4yrs ago. it was an overuse injury caused by the ellitical machine.

12. Is your pain getting worse over time? And if so, how much worse over what time period?
Shin: the more "rest days" i have between walks, the worse the pain is when i start walking again
Calf: same
Foot: pain gets getter when i rest - ie don't go for walks - but starts up right away(within 5 min) when i go for a walk again

i'm wondering if my shoes may also have something to do with this. i walk 8-10km most days of the week. in the last 2-3 months i've taken about 2 full weeks off from walking completely. i bought my shoes at the beginning of july. is it possible i've put enough km on them to destroy the foot support in them and that's the actualy cause of this? or could it be that with simple overuse issues?

Could be the shoes ... could just be inadequate stretching leading to some overuse.

Try foam rolling the entire calf area including the shin. For this I would highly recommend a lacrosse ball or a tennis ball. Do the bottom of your foot too. You can also use your hand on the ball to roll around the shin. Stretch a lot ... the stair stretch is good for the calves and feet and heel sitting is good for the shins.
