Default Ankle pain with no know cause

I've had ankle pain/swelling for the last three days. It is very odd since I have had no trauma. I'm starting worry about a cyst or something. I'm about ready to make a dr. appt., but I have military health care and it could be weeks before I even get an appt, so I thought I'd start here and see if this sounds familiar to anyone. I copied the questions from the sticky and answered below. Let me preface this with saying, when I say shoes, I mean any shoes. I've got ones with support, with no support (flip flops), open toed, closed toed, loose, tight, the works - they all generate the same pain, so I don't believe it's the shoes - it's just what's happening.

1. When did the pain begin? - About three days ago.

2. What were you doing at the time? Or did the pain come on gradually over time? I was walking back from work and I started to get pain on the bottom of my foot at the base of my toes. That was gradual pain that was getting worse the more that I walked. It was hurting both sides, so I figured my shoes were about done and I should get new ones. I came back to my office and changed my shoes.

3. Where, anatomically, is the pain? The next day the toe pain was replaced by pain and tenerness in the muscles/tendons over the navicular, but only on the right foot.

4. What does the pain feel like? Sharp? Dull? Aching? Stabbing? Shooting? When I touch the area around the Navicular and instep area it is tender, especially and you more towards the toes in the interior of the foot. It is not red or discolored. When I walk without shoes the pain is barely noticeable, and is non existant in the mornings when I'm walking around the house having never put on shoes. As soon as I step into shoes I have pains that travel from the Navicular up the interior of the calf and around the front of the shin. The pain intensifies with walking and eventally reaches the outside of the knee, but never goes further. It's much like a shin splint that wraps around my leg, but it is clearly originating from the interior side of the ankle.

5. Is the pain constant, or intermittent, or only on certain motions?

I don't feel pain while not bearing weight with the foot, but I do if I am or have recently worn shoes.

6. What motions make your pain worse? Bearing weight on the foot.

7. What, if anything, makes your pain better? Here's the bizarre thing. If I walk long enough, the ankle swells a little and the pain subsides for awhile. After I stop and sit for awhile - the pain returns when I go to walk, usually more intensely. I did put ice on it last night, but since I was laying down, it's hard to say if it improved the pain. Rest usually is the most helpful.

8. Does your pain radiate to any other part of your body?
Nope, just the ankle area.

9. What things could you do before, that you cannot do now because of your injury? Bear weight in shoes.

10. What is your main concern regarding the pain and its consequences? Getting worse, immobilizing me (I have a job where I walk alot, and cannot really do without walking)

11. Have you ever injured that part of your body before? If so, how?
I have severely sprained the left ankle, but never the right. I don't have the strongest ankles, but I have had even a minor trauma that could cause a pain such as this - especially not so continuously.

12. Is your pain getting worse over time? And if so, how much worse over what time period? It gets worse as the day goes on - if I wear shoes, but it doesn't seem to be getting more painful as the days pass. I feel like I may be doing better each day in the morning, but then when I go to walk around, it comes back with a vengeance. I have tried to rest it a little to see if that helps, but it's very hard to accomplish with my job. I am starting to think of bracing and regular ice packs, but I wanted to consult the wise to see if I should be doing anything specific to help it before I try to deal with my health care.

Thanks! Sorry this got crazy long, I'm just trying to provide enough info

You need to go see a physical therapist.

I think its neurological. The pain coming back in the morning seems like sympatheric nervous system related.

It certainly could be neurological, like a Morton's neuroma or something. But honestly it sounds more like irritation of your posterior tibialis ... if you don't have Amazon.com: The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook: Your Self-Treatment Guide for Pain Relief, Second Edition: Clair Davies, Amber Davies, David G. Simons: Books then I'd highly recommend you get it. And start doing some trigger point massage in your calves and along the bottom of your foot. Ice is definitely a good thing to do along with some gentle stretching of the calves.

Let me know how it goes ...

Thanks to you both.
Julie, I am ordering that book today. I would love for it to just be a muscle thing so I could take care of it.
I have found a pair of flip flops that don't make it hurt, so I've been wearing them, when i even need to wear shoes. It seems to be that putting pressure on that little section of the foot is what causes the pain. I can still feel it a little bit when I walk, but without the pressure of a shoe or strap on it, it's much better.
I'm going to try to keep icing it and stretch it until the book comes. Hopefully a restful weekend will help too

I got the book yesterday and it looks like I have Morton's foot as well as irritation of the adductor hallucis - which can be caused by the Morton's foot. A lot of the other symptoms associated with it also rang true with me, so it seems to all make sense. I worked with a ball on my foot last night as well as supported thumb. I tried to do the padding under the first metatarsal today, but the moleskin I have is too thin, so it's not working. I'll get some inserts and better moleskin in the next couple of days here.
I'm not sure how walking barefoot impacts the issue, but since the pain goes away when I'm barefoot, I'm using that as my primary "therapy"
Anything you guys know about helping deal with this issue are great.

Also, this book is freaking amazing. I love it. Thanks, Julie!
