Default Staying sane when can't work out - injured.

Any tips. I crashed on my mountain bike last week and have a swollen knee and mild strain in my right shoulder. Can't really do anything but some VERY mellow stretching. Went to physio a couple times, they told me to chill out until I heal up but that does't seem to be happening soon. I AM GOING INSANE!!! Used to doing weight training 3-4 days a week and cardio 2-3 days. I haven't done any exercise in 10 days now and I am losing it!!! Help. I am trying really hard to focus on not letting my diet go to crap, but I am really missing my scheduled workouts and routine. ARRRGHHH!

DRINK!

Nah, seriously, been there, done that, don't want to go back. I was on my back for almost a month with a torn hamstring, so I know where you are. The toughest thing is to fight the anger and possible depression (in my case) that comes from immobility. Stretch as much as you can. Do whatever core work you can since that seems to be the one place you DIDN'T get hurt Hang out with people. If you sit alone and sulk, bad things, man.

Spend time healing your body ... focus on foam rolling/trigger point work, mobility, and stretching ... all within the realm of avoiding increasing your pain from the crash. Sometimes what the body needs is rest and recovery.

Ya, I have been super depressed lately from losing my routine and that feeling that all my gains are slipping away - I think I will go to the gym as per usual the rest of the week and spend the time stretching and doing some core. If I sit still I just think about it too much.

Sucks that you're hurt on both your upper and lower body at the same time. I had the same feeling you're having now when I had my ACL replaced last Oct. I didn't want to lose my gains, etc... When all was said and done the long period of rest actually helped me! When I did start back to the gym my body was fresh and ready to go. I hadn't felt so good about working out in years. It didn't take long before I crushed all my old strength records and finally pulled 500lbs on the DL.

So my advice is do what you can while you're hurt, but enjoy the rest. The fact that your stressing over missing workouts means you're going to come back and be stronger than ever (as opposed to those who miss workouts and never end up back at the gym).
