Of Nike Frees and Pungent Aromas
My gym shoes stink. Not just a little. Even if they're sitting next to the door, I can smell them down the hallway. And when I put them on...phew.
I tried rinsing them out, but that only added a moldy tinge to the odor. Any ideas? Will putting them in the washer (or dishwasher) tear them up...or solve my problem and just tick off my wife?
They're perfectly fine in every other regard so I don't want to toss them unless I have to.

i can't remember if they're natural or synthetic... that would impact if they could handle a wash. I had a problem with a pair of shoes once, similar, not my frees though. Baking soda. Lots. Only needed it once.
Leathers/suedes sometimes stink. My jump rope is just terrible, so I switched to rope even though it's not what I prefer. Watering can usually only make it worse. Has to do with the tanning process, and from what I remember, usually means bad/un-thorough/something like that. Hence the baking soda.
But if they're microsuede, which is polyester, and you have them on gentle and don't spin them, they could turn out just fine... don't machine dry.
I would try non-washing methods first. It would suck to ruin them.

Try stuffing them with newspaper if you do wash them - it helps them with drying and drawing out the odor for some reason (do it with my DD's soccer cleats all the time).

I've washed my Nike Frees several times. I didn't do anything special, just threw them in with the whites I don't bleach. I let them air dry. They came out fine every time (kinda curled up a little, but they flattened right back out the first time I put them on again). They looked clean and new, and smelled fresh.

Link, please.
Between washings, you could use Febreeze. It should kill the odor.

Good advice. Thanks, everyone.
Forgot to mention it, but i've already tried the baking soda and newspaper route and they didn't help all that much. I'll toss the shoes in the washer before I go to bed and see how it goes.

Once they stink, they stink again quickly.
Next pair, do the baby powder and newspaper thing from the get go. Keeping them dry and getting them as dry as possible quickly keeps the stench from forming.
