Default Patellar Tendonitis

Hello everyone.

My husband's had knee pain during exercise for the past couple of years. He had gotten an MRI of the knee and yesterday, he got the results. The doctor said that he had patellar tendonitis and that there was pretty much nothing to be done about it. Rob (my husband) went to physical therapy for about a month (here) without noticing any real improvements. The doctor said that if that hasn't helped by now, nothing probably would.

So basically, his suggestion was to just live with it. My husband is really depressed about this, and I thought it was worth at least throwing it out there to see if any of you had ideas or recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Here are the answers to the questions in the sticky post:
1. When did the pain begin? OCT or NOV 2006.
2. What were you doing at the time? Or did the pain come on gradually over time? Just got off the treadmill doing high-incline walk
3. Where, anatomically, is the pain? front of knee, below the kneecap, a little to the left
4. What does the pain feel like? Sharp? Dull? Aching? Stabbing? Shooting? Dull aching and numbness/weird feeling
5. Is the pain constant, or intermittent, or only on certain motions? Somewhere between intermittent and constant but gets worse from exercise or standing/walking
6. What motions make your pain worse? Standing, walking, jogging, or keeping leg crossed for a while
7. What, if anything, makes your pain better? ice
8. Does your pain radiate to any other part of your body? no
9. What things could you do before, that you cannot do now because of your injury? Jogging, rollerblading
10. What is your main concern regarding the pain and its consequences? difficulty exercising
11. Have you ever injured that part of your body before? If so, how? no
12. Is your pain getting worse over time? And if so, how much worse over what time period? no

Sounds like a glute problem honestly.

1. Avoid things FOR NOW that trigger the pain.

2. Stretch TFL, glutes, quads. Hold each stretch 30-60 seconds. Twice each side. Twice daily.

3. Gluteal activation exercises (let me know if you need a list). Daily. 2 sets of 12 each. Pick 4-5 exercises that he can do competently but are still difficult.

4. Introduce him to the foam roller. TFL, lateral quads/ITB, quads, glutes, calves, hamstrings. Might need to invest in a lacrosse ball.

5. Ice for 20 minutes when it hurts.

Keep me posted!
